I'm looking for every enthusiasts dream. The best sport tire. It must have great grip(wet&dry) , have decent treadwear, low noise level, and come at a good price. I would like your impression on the tire you feel best fits the description and why. And please include the place you bought yours and the price you paid. Or just refer me to a tire dealer you know who has fair/good prices.

If it helps I'm looking for tire size 235/45/17. No variations please.

Thanks all-

all 235/45/17
1st set: Yokohama Nexus: most grip, very loud (@~60mph), fine in the wet(no complaints), poor treadlife, and $150/tire @tirerack

2nd set: Yokohama A520: OK grip, loud but less than nexus, ok in the wet, better treadlife, and $125/tire @rack

3rd set: Bridgestone Potenza re71: grip almost matching the nexus, most quiet 17" tire I've owned(my 15" snows are more quiet of course), Fine in the wet, best 17" tread life and $125/tire @rack

I need a new set soon before my inspection next month and I'm looking at either the Kumho 712's or I might go to a 50 profile tire(Firehawk LH) to fill in the wheel well more and soften the ride a little bit.

Dunlop SP5000.

Why? Do a search of the forums for "SP5000" or "SP5k" and you'll get some good feedback.

I have a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE030 235/45/17 and they're the best tires I've ever had. They hug the road, are super quiet, and have really good wet traction. The cons about this tire are the treadwear and price. At $220 a tire, I'd compromise with a set of Kumhos which are less than half the price.

Tires

Ever since i've purchased them, im all about the Kumhos. VERY quiet, good treadwear, good grip, sweet in the wet, and good breakaway characteristics at the limit... breaks gradually and predictably, not the dangerous immediate breakaway experienced with some tires. oh yeah, and about $100 a piece... 235-45-17s

Off topic, do you have any pics of your ride. I've loved Konig Verdicts since they came out bout 5 months ago. I almost got them but really wanted 18's so I passed. Post or email me pics of your ride. I think those wheels are perfect for the Max.

One thing I noticed is that you didn't say you were interested in purchasing tires that are designed to fit properly on your 7" wide rims. If that's an issue for you, check out:

Heres a pic of my car with the verdicts, for the guy who asked. its rather small... better quality digi-cam pics soon to come.

I've edited this message... i dont know what picture this is, but it is certainly not the pic i was trying to post. i dont even know whos cars those are. anyways, for a pic of the Verdicts on my max, check the 2nd page of this thread, its on there, and actually worked correctly this time.

Pirelli P7000SS, and they are within wheel spec (7") as per Pirelli in the 235/45-17 size. Michelin Pilots too, but WAY expensive.

That is incorrect, medicsonic. According to Tirerack.com, the Pirelli Supersports in 235/45R17 require a 7.5" minimum rim width. However, the Supersports in 245/45R17s can be mounted on 7" wide rims. The 245/45s are also closer in overall diameter to the stock 225/50s. So the bummer is, you may have to mount a wider tire to stay in spec.

Michelin Pilot Sports in 235/45R17s also require a 7.5" minimum rim width.

For more info on tires and tire specs, go to http://www.tirerack.com.

Well, I'll be damned. I thought I saw 7.0 on Pirelli's website, but its the 225s and the 245s. That makes NO sense though. Also, I meant that the Pilots were an excellent tire, not that they fit, but reading my post, that wasn't clear.

backgrund info:
I run snow tires through the winter months...Jan-April
I owned a 98se and got borbet type m rims for it and the nexus tires.
The fronts tire were worn bad(even after rotating every 5k) so I got yoko a520's for the front and kept the old still good nexus on the back.
Then the rear Nexus needed changing so I got the re71's and that when goodyear failed me by using the wrong machine to change out my tires so my rims got scraped up and they ended up buying me borbet type R rims and all new re71's.
I ended up selling my type m's rims cheap to my friend with a 96 max with the re71 in the front and a520's in the rear.
Now we both need new tires so I think they've lasted as long as they were supposed to
I got my 2k back in june of '99 and its got ~37k miles now...about 10k of it was on the nexus front and a520's rear so the last 30k minus winter miles has been on the re71's

hope that clears thinks up. I wanna look for a nice long lasting tire now so the whatever shop that mounts my tire won't have to for a long long time

Actually it makes a lot of sense. 225s are thin enough and 245s are tall enough (for some tire manufacturers, but not for all). It appears that as tire height increases, so does sidewall compliance.

WTF is going on here...

Well 2ndMax, i TRIED to post a pic of my ride with the Konig Verdicts that you wanted to see, and some unknown picture seems to have been posted. i can honestly say i dont have a clue whos picture that is, but it certainly isnt mine... i dont have a clue where it came from. looks like a bunch of 3rd gen maximas... i've checked my computer, and there is no image by that name on my hard drive, i dont know what the heck happened with that. anyways... i'll try this again. lets see if it works.

And by the way, you CAN mount a 235-45-17 on a 7" wide wheel, however all manufacturers recommend that 225 is the widest that ideally fits on a 7" wide wheel... but 235-45-17 can be done... i know alot of supra owners (not the most recent generation) that stick 255s on 7" wide stock wheels.

For what it's worth, I will not violate manufacturer specifications for rim width. If a manufacturer says the minimum rim width for a specific tire is 7.5", I take them at their word. You, of course, may do as you please.

One word of caution. If you are planning to mount a tire on a rim that's not designed to support it, I'd suggest you contact the MANUFACTURER of the tire and get their blessing before you do so. I would not recommend that you substitute the word of a retailer or anyone posting in this forum.

Another factor often overlooked is load rating. The tire's load rating should be matched to the maximum allowable load posted in your vehicle owner's manual. In the case of 5th Gen Maximas, Toyo manufactured an OEM tire with a load rating of 89. That's the lowest load rating I've seen for 5th Gens. I believe previous generation Maximas are lighter than the 5th Gen. So a load rating of 89 should be sufficient for earlier model Maximas as well.

For more on load ratings, check out http://www.1010tires.com/tiretech-loadratings.asp.

You could also go with 225/45R17 Kumhos, Black90SE. They're spec'd for 7" wide rims.

Check http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...CSTA+Supra+712 for specs on all Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 tires.

If you haven't already bought the Konig Reigns, I'd suggest you look for 17" rims with a width of 7.5" or 8". That will open up a universe of tire possibilities to you including most of the 235/45R17s and 245/45R17s made.

They was on my Malib first and noe the Max.
Good grip but not that great in the rain. Pretty expensive too.

They are soft, quiet, and had very good grip compared to the Kumhos that I've been riding on.

my 1st pick is the nitto 555 (300 a a). 2nd the kuhmo 712 (280 aa a). also the nitto side-wall looks better than the kuhmo. the kuhmo has alot of writing and alot of lines on the side-wall.

just to let you know i never buy tires for the street with less than 240 treadwear. anything lower than 240 won't last too long, the summer temp. kills them.

both nitto 555 and kuhmo 712 are zr rated. do you ever drive you car at about 140mph for more than 4 or 5mins? if you don't then all you need is a zr rated tire. the rating is on the sidewall of the tire, it might be on one side of the tire.

A quick trip to tirerack reveals:

Bridgestone Potenza S02 Pole Position considered _the best_ tire according to surveys
Potenza RE730 is considered _excellent_ by the reps there.
They say that the RE730 would rank top 5 in the Maximum performance category
Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP rates a smidgen higher, so worth a look.
Kumho Ecsta 712 is _very hard_ to argue for the price.

That leaves out some other brands like Nitto and Falken, but at least you have buyer feedback in a somewhat standardized format at tirerack.

When it comes time for me to go to summer/winter tires, I'll replace my 225/55/16 Dunlop SP Sport 5000s (I love 'em, but they do not do anything in the snow), I'll go with either the RE730s or the Ecsta 712s based on best survey results per $$
(if anyone cares, 215/55/16 gives a decent selection of snow tires. Pirelli Winter 210 Asim and Dunlop Winter Sport M2 look nice)

No idea. I know the 235/45/17s are $100 a tire at tirerack but I didn't know you had 7 inch rims. even though there were less 8inch rims to choose from I got 17x8's cuz the tire selection was much greater at the time I bought them and I wanted the extra tread on the road.

I think when I get new tires I want some that will fill up my wheel well gap. I might get 235/50's.
Tire rack has some 235/50's for $104/tire and the wear rating is 500! So I'd get a softer ride and lots of tread life over my re71 and their 160 tread life.

if you stick with 225/45 it will be a tough decision
