Before, I can go to my local Nissan dealer, tell them what I need, they look it up and bring the parts to me.

Now there's this new girl working there and I was ordering a valve gasket for the Stanza and spark plugs for the Maxima and she wanted the VIN for both cars.

Today I went to buy some touch-up paint for both cars and guess what? She wanted the VIN numbers for both cars.

Is there a good reason for doing this?

I think it's like gtr_rider said...they use your VIN number to pull up your customer record and update it with your latest purchases or work...Instead of using your last name, they can probably use your VIN number to pull up your file...

They can use your VIN number to make sure that what they are ordering is correct for your car. I know when I was trying to prove I had ABS for insurance, they ran my VIN mumber and it brought up and entire schematic of my car including paint and cloth stuff as well as what other features the car has. While I am sure they will take your word for what you need, it just might be a way to make sure that they are getting the right part the first time.

She digs you and she's trying to keep you there as long as possible while she checks you out. She's probably hoping you'll ask her out. You wish.

At the local dealership here they ask for the VIN but only use the last 8 digits. It's your car's serial number and that's how they track you.

It could also have something to do with Carfax information, too. I think the more people that have your name attached to your VIN, the better it is for proving its your vehicle just in case some dumb cop stops you and doesn't believe it your car. I know this may not happen much, but it can happen.
