Help...junk to rebuilt title?
okay, i'm looking at a maxima today and i ran a carfax report online. it said that the car was in a major accident and was rebuilt and given a salvage title. the title now has been changed to a REBUILT title because the owner of the car now said that after he purchased it with the salvage title, he paid to have the car inspected and given the current title of rebuilt. my questions are will i have any problems at dmv?....do i have to go through another salvage inspection or will it be a smooth purchase all around. thanks

No there is nothing special u have to do...Once the car is certified as rebuilt it stays that way, u will require state inspections normally like any other car...basically rebuilt is the same as a clear title except rebuilt has a damaged history..

60% of insurance companies sell cars that have been in major accidents to companies that rebuild totally destroyed cars. That said, they are totally aware that some of these cars come back to be insured. I know this because my wife works for Georgia Farm Bureau and runs into this from time to time.

wrong again. most insurance companies do not care whether it has a salvage title or a clear title. The rates are the same no matter what. Unless you are insured through a very small, ****ty company. Now if your car is totaled and it has a salvage title then obviously you will not get as much money for it if it had a clean title, they do care what title it has then.

I had an R title car. The insurance company wouldn't repair it and gave me the money. I had to give up the original title and then apply for the R title once the car was repaired. Would I do it again....it depends on the car. It did give me a better understanding of what an R title is. I would still do a thorough inspection to make sure there are no surprises and everything meets your expectations.

i am going to back nupe500 on this and say that some insurance companies will not issue a full coverage insurance on a car that was prev. declared as a total loss. I am speaking from a personal experience that my family had, and the ins. co. was Colonial Penn/GE Auto Insurance.

I suppose my decesion would depend on WHEN it was damaged. A 4-gen nowdays could get a rebuilt title if just the airbag and a few fenders were damaged. Now that would be a totally roadworthy car one it's repaired. But if the car was damaged when it was close to NEW, it could have sustained over $17,000 worth of damage for the insurance company NOT to fix it and deem it a total. Assuming the car sold for about $24,000 new. Now I wouldn't touch that with a 10ft pole.
Now if I were an insurance company and if a client wanted to insure a salvaged titled car, I would damned sure I wasn't insuring some rust bucket or a lawsuit on wheels before putting a policy on it. I would demand some type of state/local inspection. One could just insure any pos salvaged car that was bought for pennies. Then conveniently get into a wreck and get paid out for WAY more. There's no way an insurance company would blindly insure a salvaged titled car w/o a good inspection. Or just avoid the hassle and not insure them at all.

Insurance companies dont care and dont ask if the vehicle is salvage or rebuilt.
You pay the same amount as you would on a regualer car.
Its a dont ask dnt tell thing.
2 or 3 of my friends own salvage cars, they are happy.
