Affect of Driving on Spare.

Maybe an obvious question, maybe not I'm not sure but I'll ask anyway.

What are the affects of driving on a spare for say a couple of weeks? I know spare are really only meant to be driving on for a short period of time until the full size tire can be repaired, but what are the long term affects?

Thanks.

besides you looking broke............its smaller than the rest (i assume) so i would think your suspension could have some ill effects from it.

nothing really..one of my friends with a civic used to drive with his donut all the time, and he abused it until it blew, it takes alot to pop one of those tires from regular use.

Wow, well I have no intention of abusing it, I'm making sure to stay on the smoothest pavement, and avoid or go slowly over bumps. The tire has good tread, and is a yokohoma tire. I dont go that far with the spare, and I check Psi daily. I hope not to be on it long but I am babying it incase it maybe longer than expected.

I know, it looks so taky to see this small *** spare on the car Suspension wise, I'm on stock and my upgrade is in my room wating for dustboots, so if for some reason it kills the suspension I already have the replacement.

Yeah i know you have to be careful with potholes, a buddy of mine hit a pot hole popped the tire and ruined the rim and had to get the car towed.

I did, filled to 60Psi as specified on the tire.

I hope to not be on it long, and get some toyo proxes 4 very soon.

Um if you read the manual, it says you aren't supposed to drive more than about 50 miles. And the max speed is about 40 mph or so. With that said, I've seen some total IDIOTS driving on the freeway on a donut. Weaving around like it's a normal tire. Darwin will soon catch up with these people. Just hope they don't take out any innocent people.

I wouldn't do it on the front of the car. If you have to do it, put it on the rear. The constant speed difference in the differential might not be good if you put it on the front of the car (I'm assuming the donut is a smaller diameter than the regular tire, because I havent actually checked to confirm it is). Might not do anything, but I'd still put it on the rear just to play it safe. I don't see any harm in running it back there.

2 days is ok i guess, but riding it for a while just isnt good. and like maxrider said, you may hit a pothole and that tiny tire cant take the abuse that your regular tire can. Bumps that normally wouldnt be a problem might screw up a number of expensive things in that whole wheel area

forutnately classes and such are close, it wont be driven daily (3-4 times a week) and it would take the whole week to reach about 50 miles of travel. All local in town, so speeds never exceed 35mph. I'm just driving when needed till fund arrive and new tires can be put on. Basically the thread is to find out if there is anything else to be caution of, wearing out parts faster etc.\

it was my tire in the front that went, but after filling up the spare, I moved my back tire to the front, and put the spare in the back. I knew better thant to put the spare on the front where the power is put down.

fortunatly I am very aware of the streets and know what roads to take for the smoothest ride, it may take me a bit longer but this will be my path until new tires are at my door.

I would ride on it only to get to the tire place of if you are short on cash go one of those used tire places if you're still on stocks.

arent many used tire places around here, and I'm so short on cash I cant exactly afford to get used tires, plus I figured I'd tough it out, since I'm going to be buying new tires very soon anyway.

retreads, are the cheap alternative to riding on a spare. but still not a long term fix.

as already stated, this is hardly a longer fix, this is intended on being very short term.

Retreads... they are basicly reconditioned tires, if you have a tirewarehouse near you, they sell them... like $20 for the tire.

But i know your not going to be doing this for long, i took a rim and put a retread on it as my spare before. i am planning on doing it again for this car, so i wont have a small donut for a spare.. its a full size tire, you can go over 50mph on it but remember it is a reconditioned tire and isnt as good as new.

I have see many spares blow around me with people driving at 30-40mph. I've witnessed it maybe 6 times and was able to pull over and help 4 or 5 of those times. I asked them whether they drove fast and what not and they said no, never on the highway just local roads. Then I asked the people how many miles they drove with the spares. Most drove a few hundred miles when the spares blew. I had to drive on a spare on a recent trip to wisconsin. When I put the spare on it looked god, not underinflated or anything. After 14 miles of 65mph highway use it was almost flat and stupidly hot. In conclusion, go get a new tire ASAP. Oh and the title of the thread makes no sense.

only thing you have to remember is that they are retreads not H rated tires. use them like a spare... just like rated tires you cant go over 80 mph and expect them not to heat up. retreads are cheap full size spares that will last longer than a spare and will not mess with your suspention

thank you all for the concerns. I am driving aggrivatingly slow, and very short distances.

I was very lucky to buy a used sawblade with good tire for $30 on ebay, going to send a money order and should have it in a week or so.
