I just came back from the transmision place and the noise I hear from my max is a bearing gone bad in the tranny. The mechanic I talked to said to replace all the tranny seals and bearings it would cost about $1100. He gave me the names of other mechanics that will look for a nice condition used tranny which would be cheaper. Man I just had a new clutch in three weeks ago. What should I do? I have a 1992 maxima SE 5 speed with 130000. Also he said the gears feel strong and go in with ease.
Thanks Jon

When exactly does it make the noise? Is it only when you press in on the clutch pedal? Did your mechanic say that it might be the throw-out bearing?

If it is the throw-out bearing, it should have been replaced with the clutch.

That price is kind of high. Shop around.

I Think he said it was one of the trans-axle bearings. Its only when the clutch is up, when the clutch is all the way down it goes away almost

Unfortunately this is a somewhat common problem in these cars. JustinMC had this happen to his, and I've heard of a couple others.

the price should be closer to $600 for that job, not $1100.

BTW, that $600 was the price of a full rebuild for a 5 spd tranny, not just replacing a bearing and the seals. I believe all the bearings inside the tranny were replaced, inlucing the seals.

check around with some other tranny shops and see what they quote you...
