How Accurate and updated are carfax's records

I recently checked a carfax on a 2002 Maxima. The last record showing on 8/2003. I know in NY when the car gets inspected, or goes for service at a Dealership the milage gets recorder and are updated with carfax records. Does that vary state by state?

i don't have experience with out-of-state carfax reporting but i can tell you this:
i was in an accident with my old car (there was a police report and the insurance company was involved) and a YEAR LATER when i bought a carfax report because i was going to sell the car, there was no record of the accident. all of this happened when i lived in ny.
carfax is a useful tool, but apparently it doesn't have everything.

carfax is like a extra safty step, but it doesnty always list all accidents or milage.

If an accident was in another state or never filled with the insurance then it will not show up on carfax.

If one owner had the car and never went to a nissan dealer for service, you will just have to take the ownes word on the milage and judge by the look of the car.

Carfax is good but doens't depend on it to much.

carfax doesn't have records of everything. my old car was serviced by the dealer many times and yet very few mileage entries showed up in my report.

Carfax is throughout the states. It only gets data from state inspections or insurance company pay outs. It doesn't get data from police reports.

If you have an accident and the insurance company doesn't pay and record the repair as completed, then Carfax doesn't see it either.

It's not 100% accuract but it's much better then nothing at all.

It's better than nothing. When I had CarFax, I ran it on every vehicle my family and I ever owned. Guess what? The records that it showed were accurate, but it also did not show a lot of things. It did not show a rear-end accident with $5000 worth of damage, that was more than a year old. It did not show a car being taken to a junk yard and taken apart.

The dealer's bill of sale for my recently purchased used '04 SE had a handwritten comment about the car previously being leased. This did not appear on the CarFax report. When I "registered" with CarFax in order to obtain their `guarantee' I asked about the lack of `prior lease' as the report had no mention. The answer was pretty much `weasel-words' stating that they only report what the DMV provides. There are several large gaps in the mileage transactions.

I looked at 2 vehicles with clean carfax which had obviously had work done on them as confirmed by an inspection. Really, i wonder how reliable they are. they are nice if you dont have to pay/rely on them but nothing beats an inspection.

The Carfax disclaimer is they do not report damage/repairs unless they exceed $3,000. Of course that is just a few paint scratches these days. You might wish to ask your Auto insurance company for a C.L.U.E. report (if they are still using them). It is similar to Carfax but only provides the dollar ammount of reported damages/repairs. The last one I had was in '98 and it showed a $1,000 repair had been done.
