Just received a Paypal scam email!!! Be Careful!!

It read that there was a payment authorized through my paypal account for $190.85 through my Credit card to a luxurywatchesinc with address/ email address and all. It also stated that it would appear on my bill as "PAYPAL LUXWAT." <-Indication right there it was a scam, but I didnt see it then. I was scared. It also says if you want to dispute this payment and have it stopped it said click on the link below. So I get frantic and start logging in from the link given in the email, as soon I log on it wants me to verify my credit card number and address and all this stuff. So, I stop and think. Why am I being so frantic? I dont even have my credit card on Paypal anyway. Then I notice it let me log in with the wrong password too. So I bring up a seperate browser and sure enough it was a scam to get my cc number and use it. I tried logging in with that same password and it said from the original/correct paypal that that was the wrong password. So, I finally remember it and go in there just to check. Nothing there. Everyone of Maxima.org be careful. I almost got scammed into my own stupidity and forgetfulness. For those that do have their cc's through Paypal, bring up a seperate browser and go into your Paypal account and check from there, not the link given in the email.

I have received about 3 emails from paypayl in the last week, all of them scams. I dont even have a paypal account and the email reads as follows :

Recently, our Account Review Team identified some unusual activity in your
account. In accordance with PayPal's User Agreement and to ensure that your
account has not been compromised, access to your account was flagged. Your
account will remain flagged until this issue has been resolved.
This is a fraud prevention measure meant to ensure that your account is not
compromised.

"

It then asks me to login and check my account status, so I realize right away that this is a scam since paypal or ebay will never ask you to sign in. Then when I click on the link, instead of paypal.com, it sends me to a page that looks exactly like paypal, but has a different URL.

I also received an email scam from an ebay look alike. I sent all of these emails to paypal and ebay and hopefully something will be done about it.

Always becareful when receiving emails asking you to sign in.

It just sounds funny...

it sounds similar to writing a college paper and prepping it up with semi-big words to sound impressive.

On a side note, I spoke to Paypal before about scams and they stated that if Paypal is to send an email to you. It will always start off as "Dear <name>" and not "Dear Paypal Customer" or any other form. It will always contain your full name.

Yes for real. They were fishing. I bet you anything you typed they recorded. They have your email address already, now they have one of your passwords... not good.

just a side note, eBay also have those scam e-mails, so when you do get one from eBay, send it to spoof@ebay.com, i got about 5 of them already, none from paypal though, but most likely i will since i use it so much.

So the paypal scammers are coming hard this week, I had one on Tuesday that said I had received a payment of about $25 to my account, thankfully I was not expecting anything and I also knew to look for where the link sends you at the bottom. I sent it to the spoof email for paypal as well as the scammer notice for Yahoo.

The same thing is true at eBay.

Never type in personal information on a site whose URL doesn't start with "https". That designates that it's secure and has been registered officially as a secure site.

Funny, I had a similar scam done to me for paypal as well this week.

I got an email that told me somebody with an IP address different than mine was trying to access my account. The email also provided a "click here to go to the site" scheam too. I didn't use their "click here", I opened another brouser and went directly to my shortcut. I found absolutely nothing about warnings like that on my acount or in their site. I never even thought that the email was a scam, but I bet if I clicked on it's link I'd hit the scam.

I should go look and see if I saved that email....

I get about ten of those a week. have been for years. same as the fake bank messages and credit card schemes.

a couple of things.

1. paypal always sends me messages in TEXT ONLY. I don't know if that's set in my userprefs or what, but I never get any emails from paypal with text in them. From my business I get sometimes ten paypal messages a day, and I have NEVER received one in HTML.
the ones you're getting from luxurywatchesinc probably look like this one:
http://ourworld.cs.com/mypaypallogln/logo.gif
notice that's ONE image file, and not an actual text/HTML message.

2. always check the URL of the login page and see that it goes to paypal.com.. those emails always go to a place like:
http://netizen.net.au/webscr.php?cmd=LogIn
https://paypalssl.doubleclick.net/cl...validation.htm

sometimes they'll even have paypal in the address like login.paypal.spammer.net or something.. just make it a practice never to use those links to log in.

Wow, thanks Matt. That is the exact one that I received too. Now, I wonder if in the past I have received these and have never known it. Though this is the first one I have seen. I did change my password for my Yahoo account by the way. Thanks for that heads up as well.

To be on the safe side, you should always manually type in the URL.

I did the exact same thing as you Q....same luxorwatch or whatever. I signed in the realized something was not right so I 'x'ed out. Then several days later I got an email from Paypal saying my account was limited now. So I had to sign back into paypal and change my password and do a few other verification things.....my account is still limited because I do not have a home phone and they cannot do the phone verification thing on a cell phone so I have to wait for them to mail me some form for verification. It sux
