V1 has done me well. I love the arrows and the bogey counter it has. It gives me plenty of distance from the cop to slow down. Other than that, you could also look into BEL and Escorts models. They are pretty good also.

that reviews four major brands(Escort, V1, Bell, and K40(?)), pretty good info and a final score for all four and the Bel 980 scored the best-->

Re: Heres a website.....

Try again... The bel 980 scored 2nd. The PASSPORT 8500 was rated the best. That is what I own, and I love it. Well worth the money.

Whisler is the one that has a women speaking, Bel has a guy, Passport doesn't use that useless technology... I rather have something that protects better than speak

The Escort 8500 scored best on the radar test, I have had one for about four months and am very pleased with the distance it picks up radar.

Not to be rude...but

USE THE SEARCH FEATURE!! This topic come up about once a week! The Passport 8500 is the best/newest/best value, followed by the V1 and then the Bel 980(?). If the V1 ever becomes a V2 IT will be the best.

Try the search feature...

MAXIMARIDER

What tells you the V1 is the best? Latest studies would indicate that the less expensive, Passport 8500 with more features is truly the best detector on the market. Mike Valentine is using a piece that is 1o years old. That speaks volumes about the unit and its ability to remain current to todays standards. It also speaks volumes about its design, durability and reputation. What it doesn't do is tell you that it is becoming outdated, it IS ugly and desperatly needs to be revised in order to effectively compete. Take a drive with both and you will see. I have done extensive studies with both units, even in the car at the same time. The V1 is solid. But's its ugly by most people standards, doesn't have good Ka reception (what most cops use now) poor laser detection compared to the 5 diode unit in the passport (V1 has one diode) and is costly.

I think what you need/meant to say was that is WAS the best!

Is it now? I don't think so. But it comes in a very close second to the 8500. That's why I sold the V1. What do I miss? The arrows and that's it!

BTW...isn't your unit "hot." If I remember, you were the one talking about how your unit was "cheaper" if you know what I mean. I don't think its fair to comment on how expensive it was if you haven't even paid full price for yours---Expensive is not $250 off of the street. Its the $400 everyone else paid! Get a Passport!

Just my .02

i have the older gen V1. i think its great. sensitivity on long drives comes in handy. it saved my *** on memorial day.
but it does trip alot on X band, doh.

but i think the v1 is VERY helpful when it comes to directional bogey counts.

V1

Gets my vote.
I am quite happy with mine.
Especially appreciate the directional arrows and the bogey counter.

As somebody said, try the search feature on the org.

Also check out www.speedzones.com

[a recent review of detectors]

Whatever you get will pay for itself pretty quickly.

My only problem is not laughing and flipping the bird to the cop as I drive past...

Woops

Hey-
Hindsight would tell me that ripping into MAXIMARIDER about his V1 being stolen is not appropriate--I appologize for that. I guess I am senative to stolen equipment as I had my $4000 stereo RIPPED out of my car at one point....they even took the door panels b/c they went for the seperates in the doors with the tweeter on the pilars----A$$holes.

So...The V1 debate I think its an excellent piece, don't get me wrong. I just happen to think that the Passport 8500 has FINALLY beat the V1. It took Passport/Escort 10 years and bankruptcy to do it, but they did do it. 10 years ago noone and I mean NOONE could even get close to the V1. That thing was simply amazing. Not only did it have better range than the old Classic Passport (sometimes called the 2700) it also was able to equal that performance on Ka (superwide and narrow band). Most detectors in the early 90's were able to detect X, K, and KA but they didn't detect any of those bands real well overall. Now the PASSPORT was able to detect X and K still only and it "trounced" the new ones, but would even notice the KA threat. Then ESCORT/PASSPORT came out with a cheaper line to appeal to buyers with a lighter wallet..the 2100, the Laser 1000, the 4200/4500 and then they got back on par with the 4600. The 6800 was nothing more than a rebadged 4600 with the phone jack on the left side.---same for the 7500. Then the best thing ever for them---the 8500. Has the phone jack on the right--where is should be---and it beat the original PASSPORT in X/K detection range and killed the new models(V1, Bel 980) in Ka range. Not to mention that they finally did away with one little diode to detect laser-----5 are used now---more than any other detector on the market!

Not it might seem sick I know a lot about these. Remember that I work for an insurance company too I have actually inspected and writted the account which makes the circuit boards for the ESCORT/PASSPORT and the V1 models in Cincinnati, Ohio. I think I have read about radar detectors since I was about 13, and I am 24 now!

Take care--again my appology for jumping on ya MAXIMARIDER---just hate stolen merchandise

I've never had a radar detector, but recently I have considered buying one. Essentially it seems the V1 and the 8500 come close in performance which is really the important feature. It seems the V1 owners love the bogey counter, but if you've never had one you won't miss it either. For me the important thing is price compared to performance, so the passport fits nicely. I can get the detector with a hardwiring kit and accessories for $300 rather than $400. Everyone has their own opinon, but I would say that for the entry level person the 8500 fits better. Veterans will miss their old features, so the V1 is a better choice. Just an observation
