Rented an 06'

So I picked up my rental 2006 Max 3.5SE today. I own a 91 Maxima SE and all I can say after driving this 06' is, they DON'T make them like they used to.

maybe he could be referring to the cheap plastics used in the interior, rattles, etc.

the "build" part usually doesn't refer to engines.

The 91 was advanced for its day (in regards to a fully loaded VE equipped 3rd gen). The 5th and 6th gens haven't improved much given over a decade of technology

I was referring to build quality and materials used. They really cut alot of corners on the 6th generation. We will see if the VQ will last/outlast the VG, cause the VG has been one of Nissans most reliable engines to date. 236,000 miles on my 91 VG and runs as smooth and quiet as it did in 91. Uses absolutely no oil. I'm sure the VQ do the same if properly maintained if not better. But the cheap plastics, rattles, squeaks, front suspension, etc. on the 6th gen needs improvement.

There's a VQ30 in the 4th gen forum that has 367,000+ miles on it and it still runs strong

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=433836

as far as a 6th gen goes, I've yet to test one. I've seen quite a bit around where i live

Yeah, the former. A friend of mine who's actually 2 years from retiring is shopping the Maxima/Avalon/Accord 6-cyls, and he owns a 4th gen. He said the Maxima was the worst of the 3, although the price is very low (crazy discounts as usual). The Accord got it's trunk/tails changed so it's not as ugly. The Toyota dealers want LIST PRICE for the Avalon. Once again, supply and demand, and Nissan is left in the cold. The one thing that Maxima will always have going against it is total cost of ownership. Anyone who keeps the car less than 7-8 years should not be penny-wise and pound foolish by buying a Maxima. Who knows, maybe the 7th generation will be a good-looking car and that will change everything.

Given that you were 8 years old back in 1991, you truly have a remarkable memory!

saying a 6th gen looks better than a 3rd gen

I will give them credit, atleast they fixed that mistake called a beam.

you can think all you want, there are over 3 known VG's that have belonged to members that had over 500k on them, orig engine, still running very strong.

go drive a 4th or 5th gen thing, the interior is not a 6th gen specific thing . Kinda sucks, but then again maybe we were spoiled with ours

i think the 3rd gens look the best...thats just my opinion...they are defiantely made better......look at some of the accidents they get into and how they hold up.........god bless one of our .orgers that survived a bad one....it was in a 3rd gen..it took the impact pretty well

Newer is usually better when it comes to technology. For example, all the new cars have an engine start/stop button, smart key/comfort assist technology, traction/stability/brake force, no throttle body, active steering (OK, the 6th gen has few of the above but you get the idea). The thing about the 6th gen is Nissan really messed-up on the styling. As a rental who cares, but that grille/hood combo is not too attractive imho, esp if it's my .05.

I personally think Nissan was ahead of the curve with the Maxima right through the fall of '94, when the first 4th gen became available. People paid 27k back then for the car--they actually paid that. I doubt anyone has paid 27k for a brand-new Maxima from 95-06!!!!

just saying I think you guys need to find bigger things to attack then a 13+ year old car. Instead of attacking some of the last decent cars Nissan made why don't you go after the new crap they are putting out.

Seriously Nissan needs to step it up a notch.

The attacks were first made by 3rd gen owners, not 5th or 6th gen owners. Nissan's quality sucks, everyone knows this. I personally have began to HATE my 5th gen.

no, a third gen owner made an observation about how the quality has gone down between his rental 6th gen and his 3rd gen. I noticed the EXACT same thing with my 3rd gen compared to my old 5th gen.

Then the other guys came in and started to attack the thread starter.

Work on a 3rd gen then work on a 4th + gen. There are major quality differences, esp. the interior fit and finish.

time to retire that car..

well your right about quality, 4th gens i think have the lowes quality because they were made cheaply because nissan was going bankrupt i believe? and borrowed some money from France or some shiet like that? neways 4th gens are poorly made.

In western Washington, Maxima's go for substancially more than they do in the majority of the country.

3rd gens are still worth 3-4k. 4th gens 5k and up, 5th gens about 10k and up.

Although it's probably a bit lower now, not much though. They still easily go well over blue book.

I don't know about yours, my car is one of the most reliable and well built cars I have ever seen, that includes new ones.

4th gen > Everything else, they look better than the rest (done right, of course)
They're faster than the rest (engine swaps, lightweight)

The only crap that I don't get is that damn solid rear axle, or beam. The 3rd gen suspension system was much better IMO.

I purchased my mustang 12/29/2002
purchased my white 92 se 5spd 7/31/2003

...

I have no idea why I even bothered with the Maxima, stupid mistake in hindsight but I still love the car and everything I did. I owned 3 cars at one point, I'm trying to get that down to one again. I'm 20 years old so I don't even need to own a 4 door family car. I realized as much as I like my car, it was smarter to just put it back to stock, recoup as much money as I could and just sell it. Drive what I have avaliable to me and play with the Mustang.

I also don't see some wall between Japanese and American cars. People who think Japanese cars are the best are idiots, as are those who think American cars are. Each manufacture has it's strengths and weaknesses.
