lottery idea for modification money...please read

maybe this is really stupid, but here it is, u be the judge.......
me n few other guys on the org were talking about not having money to do certain mods, so i was thinking we could run a weekly lottery with whoever wants put in $1 and is entered (for example 3000 members enter a certain week). then like 5 or 10 winners are picked (5 for example = $600 to each winner) its better than one winner getting so much $$$ a few can win, hence more fun fun fun. and to make more maxima oreinted thay have to spend it on their car n post pics.

the only problem is how to make it fair??? who to trust with all that $$$ and how to make the drawings for the winners? we can use paypal (tho they take 3%) to ensure proof of payment entry each contest but how and who to pick winners??? maybe some kind of live drawing, or computer program??? how ta make it fair so people will not feel cheated?

anyway post ideas and opinions....just think $1 a week or every other week will not kill u, and the odds of winning are not too terrible, especially u have like 10 winners, thats good mod money

well, at least this idea is different than the usual ideas of pooling money for mods and stuff. honestly i dont think its a bad idea, but i really dont think its fonna work. youd have to set up a paypal account with someone trustworthy to run it and distribute the money to the 5 or 6 winners. its not a bad idea, but i can see the amount of people willing to put these dollars in dropping off relatively quickly, or just not as many people willing to do it, i mean, at the end of the week what if you only have $100, ya know? youd probably have to get Doug and some other admins in on it.

this is an interesting idea, but personally, i wouldn't do it until i had money to throw away like that. and once i did have money, i wouldn't need the lotto. myself, i'm too poor to do it regularily, but maybe once in a while once i see how it works.

i dunno if you'll be able to get 1000 entries, but then again, maybe people will really be up for this? i think the number of winners should be dependent on the number of entries, maybe? like the number of winners will be equal to 10% or 25% of the total entries? i dunno. it's a good idea, i think, just have to see if it takes off or not.

EDIT: yeah, the paypal might be the tricky part. and how would we know how many people entered? you would have to post to say you entered, or something? if people were completely honest, then it may just work. not saying people one here would cheat anyone else out of anything, so it just has to be really controlled.

also, maybe you should only be able to bet if you have X number of posts or have been a member for X number of months?

(another little idea so everyone benefits: maybe some percentage, like 1-2% of the winnings should go to the .org itself?)

lots of little knots to work out, but an interesting idea, nonetheless

yes, like i said lots of things to work out, we could adress one issue at a time, but the major is who to trust, how to draw.

1. if only 100 enter then we would just push it till it reaches 1000, or somethimg of that sort
2. and the idea of # of winner depending on entires is goo too
3. 1 or 2% to the org, sounds fair,
4. we'd know # of entrires by starting a thread and evryone would number themselfs perhaps, but at 1000 entirs that would be a long thread.

keep ideas commin....

I got reason to believe you can write a program in C or basic for this. the only hard part would be someone would have to put all the names into wordpad or something. if there are any other programmers in here we can discuss it. my thought are to do an *infile type thing and run a loop(i'm not really sure how to do random picking) and then post the winners up on the org and then they have to claim the money becuase we all know some people are gonna forget about it and stuff and then that is just more money for next time. pm me if you think this will work and we can try to get something fixed up

I would be interested in making the program if you guys want...

I have alot of java experience.
It would be fairly simple
I would set up a form that is password protected
Whoever is in charge of funds would know that password
he/she would then add people into the drawing [database]
I would select all rows, and pick a random x [x number of people]

Fairly simple

lemme know if you guys want, ill start on it.

ok, that sounds reasonable....
maybe all that enter post, in consecutive number into a thread and just assign themselfs the next number in order, and post proof of paypal payment link. that way u dont enter names but just the number, program picks one, and u go back to the list and find who that number is.....so whats next

alright dima

I could do that too.

Only thing is we need to organize how people pick numbers, because two people might pick diff #s

I could make some kind of 6 digit random # generator or smthg

People would paypal, then i would email them the random #, they post in thread, and we post the winning #, and see who matches.

12
and my paypal confirmatin link, or something

but ur idea may be even better, i like that

in the program you can use either character or numbers.......they only bad thing about posting a number is that if 2 people post at the same time they will have the same number. godly one if you need any help on the program let me know. i have been using C but i think Java is somewhat similar

just have a disclaimer. if you bid, no refunds. period.

each entry should be assigned a number in the order they are entered. so 1000 entried = numbers 1-1000. then you can just get a random number selector, even a TI-83 calculator can do this, and that will be the number.

oh and a rule should be you can't win twice.

(unless I do. then that rule is void. definitely)

You know, most people aren't going to spend that money on there car. They're gonna spend it on paying bills or what not. I think you should have contract that says that you're going to use the money to spend on the car and not on personal debts and expenses.

sounds like an interesting idea.. and A33 even if the winner doesn't spend it on mods, who cares? its a lottery, you win the money and thats it..

also, if someone demands a dollar back they are pretty pathetic. its a friggin dollar, who cares. you can find one on the ground, how cheap are people, really?

it sounds like a lot of work for the caretaker of the money tho, and who has the time or the want to do something for nothing?? maybe they could get a small percentage of the pot?

boo! then eventually, no one will put a buck in anymore lol

this might work, how many members on this site? 20 thousand? 3000k measly dollars could be donated easily at a buck a person

If I use the money to put gas in my car, would that be considered spending money on my car? I could even take pictures of the gas cap and fuel needle to prove I did.

I like the idea, the only downfall would be if there is lack of participation to make it worthwhile. The other downfall is PAYPAL. It is somewhat convenient for 1 way transactions, but not more than that. For example you put in $1 it's actually like $.97 after their fee. Then whoever wins it is subject to maybe even 4%. Win $1000 and receive $960-$970. It would have to be "under the radar" or it may be subject to tax as well. I do like the idea, I don't like the money transfer loss.
