Mix n' Match with suspension??
Mix n' Match with suspension??
Hey guys, I currently got the full tokico Illumina suspension kit on my 4th gen, (struts/springs). I like the way the car sits, but i would like a more aggressive look, ie a slight forward lean. The back sits nicely, I would just like it alot if the front was lowered a bit more. I was contemplating cutting a dead coil off each of the fronts, I know this messes with the spring rate, so I wasnt to excited about doing it. My question is, can I safely cut a dead coil off the front Illumina springs, and If not, can I mix springs, ie. Illuminas in the rear, and stechs...progress...or something a little more aggressive in the front, as the back sits well on illuminas, and i like the ride. Any helps appreciated....
well, i didn't know they sold springs by the front or the back, i just thought they sell them as a set. If you're gonna do that, get something with a more even drop. I have the S-techs, and they provide a very even drop, 2 finger gap all around. Also depends on what tranny you have, and if you have anything in the trunk. if you want the ultimate in adjustability, get coilovers...and if you dont want to give up your illuminas, get eibach ground control coilovers to go along with your struts.

I have to ask. I like the eibachs, but im lookin for a more forward lean. The eibachs seem dead even to me. BTW im an automatic, with no system in the trunk. Lookin to keep the illumina struts, and If i can, the back springs as well.
DO NOT CUT YOUR SPRINGS. don't even think about it.
you can mix and match, for instance... I have kyb/agx shocks. on the front I have progress springs, and on the back I have H&R springs. I did this to give me an even drop in consideration for all the extra weight in my trunk in regards to my system. but what ever you do, dont cut them.

I had stech fronts and eibach rears on AGX's and they were fine. The ride is harsh with the stech's drop and spring rate. Keep in mind that I have a 100+lbs system in the back so it sat even. I am a manual as well.
thx guys, yeah im planning on gettin new springs for the front. I guess im gonna change the front springs....something a little lower. Thinkin stech's, progress or maxspeed. Just want the front lowered a bit
i have had intrax, eibach, canuck motorsports, and an array of combinations. if you dont mind a slightly less comfortable ride then get different front springs. but if you buy the stechs you may as well install all 4 since they have a raked drop anyhow. they will stick you on the bump stops however and you wont like it. my CM springs are pushing it already.
also i have installed the tokico setup for a freind and there are no dead coils on the front. you will end up losing what little preload they have and they could fall out while driving. also from what i remember tokicos, eibachs, and intrax were all the same drop in the front. the rears differ with the intrax being the lowest. the toks were very similar to the eibachs maybe toks being a bit lower in the rear. my advice is to keep the toks and maybe raise the rear.

Interesting. I was thinking that. I mean it does bug me a lil the way the car stands, but i dont think it justifies changin all four. I think ill change the front to a lower spring, and see how it is, and if I no likey, I can alsways go back to the tokico springs. Any other suggestions besides s-tech/progress?....i think sprints might be TOO low for what im lookin for.
Instead of changing front springs, you could also raise the rear slightly with a 5/8" spacer like this.

That should lower the front maybe half that distance. It would raise the rear so that gap would increase but it would give you the aggressive raked look.

I've used both ES and Progress spacers/isolators. Some screw into the top or bottom of the spring. Others just sit between the spring and perch.
Here's the ES choices. For $20 it's worth a shot at trying. These also can help a bit binding and bad strut bearings if you grease em.

i have a GROUND CONTROL coil over conversion to use over tokicos (FOR 1995 to 1999 models) complete with eibach springs and STILLEN camber plates for sale. any interest? with this set up, you can put any rake on the car you want...within reason. total adjustment range is about 3 inches. e-mail directly for pictures jrong@alltel.net
