does this sound like a scam?

i put my car up for sale on auto trader, and i got this emial from this guy

Hello,
Thanks for your mail, I have forwarded your vehicle information to my client, as you can see am very fast on this transaction because the vehicle is needed fast, my client is so anxious to have the Vehicle.but Due to time constraint on the fact that we are running short of time,
I am pleased to inform you that after deliberating with my client who
just contacted me now based on the state of the vehicle in the
description you gave me plus that of the ad, he has finally accepted
your price, hopes the engine is serviced and oil changed as he cant
wait to see the vehicle parked in his garage.
However,My client made out a certified cashier's check of($23,000)
before he traveled to London on a Business Trip, for a previous vehicle
and its shipment charges etc,but it was unfortunately sold. The amount
on the check he deposited for the vehicle is bigger than what should be
paid to you now, so the check is now meant for the total expenses
which includes the purchase of your vehicle, the pick up of the vehicle from
its present location and the shipping charges/other necessary
shipping arrangements.
However he has instructed us to carry on with this transaction; but
due to company policy this check has to be made out in this amount to
you because company policy only allows a refund payment on one
cashier check. So you're required to deduct the cost of your vehicle
($14,800)and send the balance of($8,200) to my client shipper agent via western union money transfer or money gram transfer to enable him offsett
shipping charges/pick-up arrangements.
After payment has reached you and balance sent back to him, our agent
will come for the pick up on an open vehicle and then drive to a pre
paid shipper for shipment, and also conclude other necessary shipping
arrangement so you dont have to bother yourself about the pick up and
shipping arrangements, while title papers and other necessary documets
will be sent by you via regular mail Delivery to my customer.
Please Confirm this and provide FULL NAME,ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER
for check payment to be delivered to you via regular mail delivery.
Best regards to you,
Bill.

this was after aswering his questions about the cars condition.
did any one who sold their cars before, did you get this kind of e mail?

Yes, yes it does. I would never sell a car overseas unless it was some super-rare exotic... Who the hell "imports" a maxima overseas?

Well you will send him $8200 for the difference before you get the message from your bank that the international money order is bad and you will never hear from him again.

Hmm.....western union money order or money gram!!!! these are the worst services to use to send money....if u ever deal on ebay....people will highlight how they will not accept anything through these services.

Now he says "made out a certified cashier's check of($23,000)
before he traveled to London on a Business Trip, for a previous vehicle
and its shipment charges etc,but it was unfortunately sold....". Don't these things get made out to someone's name? In that case, wouldn't he have to make a new one anyways or was a nameless cheque? Kinda dangerous to do that if you ask me.

That little bit about company policy only allows a refund payment on one
cashier check is bogus.....they would get their money back so why wouldn't they allow it?

Also....he is in such a rush but at the end, he will send you the cheque via regular mail (last line of his long email!)....

Seriously...this deal seems too complicated and too scamish!

A lot of people have reported getting scammed...money order that arrives and is claimed never to have been recieved...people have also complained incessibly about inadequate tracking.

If you go on ebay, you will see some posts specifying no western union transactions.

I cant believe guys are still getting away with this stuff.. this is indeed a big time internet scam

They seem to usually hit cars on ebay too.. and it's usually young guys with sort of 'modded' cars who just might think that some guy overseas would actually want to pay that much for the car..

A couple years back a buddy of mine with a pretty crappy (but modded) early 90's N/A DSM got caught in that scam. I believe it originated out of Africa. Anywho, dude sent him something crazy like $25k and wanted the difference (of course)

It seemed fishy to me (I hadnt heard of the scam yet), but my buddy went ahead and tried to do it. Sure enough he got a cashiers check in the mail and boy did it look legit. He deposited it at his bank, then a few days later was contacted by the bank that it was a fake check.. (just like another member said - part of the scam that i'll actually go through at first)

Of course after that happened I came home and googled it and sure enough this scam seems to be one of the more prevelent ones out there

Bottom line... stay away at all costs. But just imagine.. these guys must send thousands of these e-mails out and surely there's a good deal of people who fall for it and someone is making some serious money off it too

There is a similar scam on eBay for high-end electronics. A few months ago I saw an auction for an AVIC D1 for like $500 dollars. I emailed the seller and he says he is in London and that I needed to use Western Union to transfer him money. Once he recieved it, he would send the product. I asked if he took PayPal like most legit sellers and he said his PayPal was malfunctioning.....riiiggght.....

Definite scam. Saw a special on FOX News on a couple of people who fell victims to this scam. It was on the exact same principles you described.

you think FBI would care about this? there are so many scams its not even a joke!

i tried to sell my xbox couple months ago on ebay and i get some email like this one saying that shes from over seas and her client is willing to pay 200 for xbox. now that right there just seem so sammish, i mean who ever pays 200 for xbox nowadays? i would be lucky to even sell it for 100 bucks. she was saying shes gonna send the money over western union... and whenever i asked about where she is from, where is the client, they never answer, thats all same with scammers, they dont waste time with people who ask questions, they just go for those dumb people who dont even ask questions and go right along with them.

for a minute i did believe this guy was gonna buy my car... how stupid....

Please don't send any money back to them. The check you get will most likey be fake. Have the bank look at it to confirm its fake, then report it to the athorities.

I like how they keep on referring to your car as the blanket term "the vehicle" and say how they "can't wait to have [it] parked in their garage!!11"

Getting so excited over a Maxima...

Dear Sir(s),
My client, vacationing in Nigeria, wishes to perform the
transaction you indicated in your above indication.
Sadly, his pet antelope passed away this season
but left an inheritance of US $1.000.000.00.
My client has authorized me to authorize a Check,
written to you, in the sum of US $1.000.000.00, for your
above indicated transaction indication.
Please to send us the balance of the transaction
minus a small Fee you may keep of US $15.000.00 funds.
As his vacation is nearing its end, my client wishes
to make this as smooth as possible.
Best Regards to You,

Of course. However, my mattress cannot contain those many bills and still allow me to sleep comfortably. Therefore, I am asking you to please send me a blank check, signed by you so that I can deposit an amount of approximately $(whatever you in your checking account) into my checking account. After this transaction, I will Fed-Ex you the $1,000,000,000,000,000.00 in cash. I am looking to complete this transaction as soon as possible. Thank you.

blank check sent. Just wait outside next to your mailbox. I don't want it stolen, so please be patient and just wait at the box until it comes.

You should check the DC forums. We're having a meet this weekend in Frederick. For you, 95 south to 70 west. Not too far from Jersey.

If they are trying to scam at least they could of made it sound like people actually talk. Who parks their vehicle in their VEHICLE garage? Just sounds stupid. It does sound like someone from another country other than the US wrote that.

This is a scam, in all thoses e-mail the writer always try to bring you into an unbelievable-complex story, that's where they get you if you start believing it.

Tell the guy to send you the exact amount on a certified AMEX check, or a wire transfer directly into your bank account, tell him you dont give a shiet about his story, dont be a fool trust no one unless you know him very well. Look at the fact, the guy want to rush you with time issue and all kind of crap, how can you believe someone you never met and dont even know ? I mean you have a car for sale and that's it end of story. A good faith buyer would accept your condition, or perhaps he will try to negociate but that's a fair practice in business so once you agreed on the condition and price he just need to send the payment and that's it, end of story.
