High/Rough Idle
High/Rough Idle
I have been experiencing a high/rough idle in the last 4-5 months (Idle at 1500 in P or N when warmed) and thought the problem was resolved after a tuneup where new plugs were installed, MAFS, throttle body, fuel injectors were cleaned, and new filters (air, fuel) were installed.
Some 4th generation owners have had this problem or something similar to it after reading the threads and posts...but I am not sure if anyone else from across the various Maxima generations have had this problem of a high idle and what the problem was identified and what you did to fix the problem?

The problem specifically was that the car idles at about 1500 when warm (temp needle at the middle) which is very high for a 97 Maxima. I beleive the car is running rich, so I adjusted the air intake, which bought the idle down a bit.
I have noticed that when the car idles at 1500, I immediately restart the car, the idle comes back down to normal to about 750/800...
Any thoughts?

Replace/check the engine coolant temp sensor.
Check for any binding in the throttle cable.
There is a procedure for setting the default throttle stop and the IACV bypass so the car idles correctly. The Haynes shop manual describes it briefly.

I actually have the haynes and went through it...can you tell me what page/section you are making a reference to?
I checked the coolant temp sensor--normal...had a mechanic double check that and also the throttle cable after I made a pass at it about a month or so ago...
If you are referring to the screw that adjusts the idle--or the procedure for setting the idle...done that already as well per one of the stickies and also the Haynes Manual...so I am a tad confused on the IACV bypass you referred to. Appreciate the help-- BC
