I think I've got a hole near the top of my gas tank,
what does it usually take to fix it (I'm guessing replacing the tank)? and how much does it usually cost?

Yeah I have the same thing I think on my 88 I noticed today that when I filled my

tank up for some reason after I got off of work I noticed a large dark spot on the ground under the car near the gas tank. where do you think this could be coming from. I have a 1988 Nissan Maxima though.

There is a Recall out for this. Take your car to any nissan dealer, its should cost you nothing to get it fixed. If they tell you that you have to pay call nissan.

my previous experience

First I hope you get it fixed under the recall.

On another car (not Maxima) they wanted over $400 to fix a leak. I think they would have encased the tank in plastic.

On another note, the dealer wanted $500 to replace a fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump. I found an independent shop to only replace the corroded part with PVC (the dealer gives you some bull that the pressure is too high to do it that way) for $94.

At any rate it's good to fix it because fuel is a pain when it leaks. You really need to keep the car where it's well ventilated.
