dont put so much stock into carfax. its best for just letting you know how many owners it had. as far as accidents, id say more than half will not appear on carfax. of course its good for letting you know if its salvaged, but the title would say that anyway.

carfax is not 100% accurate.

My dad's old max, which was in three accidents did not appear on the report.

Carfax reps are browsing through forums to find carfax members who are helping others without their permission. So watch out! I've witnessed another forum where it's banned.... (of course you can do it via pm)

Carfax isn't perfect but a good tool in your search for the right car. I test drove a private party 98 I30 with low miles for an unbelievable price. Car drove fine, looked ok upon a once over. I got the vin and checked it that night. Found out the car was a total flood loss from across the country. $20 is more than worth it.

In some cases the info won't be available unless you know the exact jurisdictions the car has been titled in. Oregon is notoriously poor at maintaing vehicle information and we have a problem with salvage titles from other states being washed by being titled in OR which has weaker restrictions than other states.

OK, am new to forum and it will not let me start a new post, so I will post under this one. I am not yet a Maxima owner but have always been drawn to them. I totalled my Nissan Pathfinder a couple weeks ago and just recieved my settlement from insurance. After the lienholder was paid off, I have about $5000 to spend on a Maxi. I am not out to buy anything new, I want to keep it under $10,000, and have found many on autotrader.com that appeal to me. I guess my question is, are there any certain years to avoid? I keep reading about problems with Maxima's, coils etc... This makes me kind of scared to buy one that has been previously owned. What kind of mileage can I expect to get, is 100,000 miles very high for a Maxi? Are there certain things to look for when buying? I don't know much about maximas, let alone cars in general. My other option is to just get a used Honda, but they seem so plain jane boring. Can someone please convince me on why I should get a Maxima? I have a family also, so are they suitable family vehicles? Thanks for any and all replies in advance

How about not hijacking an existing thread and going through the newbie process like everyone else?

Check this thread for details.
