It probably saved me from a few. I don't doubt it's one of the best. I just don't really care for them anymore.

i'd folllow RS-3 recommendation on the first point. But as for helicopters i'd watch out for signs on the side of the road stating that this road is surveilled by helicopter. Where I live, that's how they do it.

Actually one radar detector plus for me is, on long road trips when not on cruise control my car is rock solid and smooth so sometimes I don't realize I'm in the 80-90mph zone and one peep of my radar detector and I automatically check my speed.

Just an FYI, Radar detectors are legal in ever state except:

1- Virginia
2- Washington, DC
3- All US Military Installation

Drive safe dudes and watch your speed...

PS, plus 1 on they pay for themselves...

That's honestly what I'm more afraid of .....$135 sucks, but the insurance surcharges are like double the ticket price, every month.Hence why even a $300 Valentine 1 Makes financial sense in the long run ......

Yall can tell I just got out of econ class lol ...

The one useful piece of info in this thread - I'll be heading to VA this weekend. Thanks for the reminder.

If your heading toward the Northern, VA area anywhere within 20 miles of DC, the stormtroopers are particularly brutal and hunt in packs.

I have a V1 and use it primarily in the city. The nice thing about the false alarms with it is even though it does false quite a bit, it lets you know how many reading it's getting and what kind. The range on this thing is incredible too. I was stopped once behind a full size van at a stoplight when the V1 blipped K-band twice then went off in an area where it never falses. I knew right away what it had picked up. Sure enough, about a MILE up the road, there was porky sitting in his umarked on the side of the road, hitting cars traveling in the opposite direction.

Keep in mind the V1 picked this up from behind a van a mile away. It's saved me so many other times that it's payed for itself many times over. The only time I got a ticket was when I had the V1 in a glovebox after not putting it up. The cop got me for going 37 in a 30. Doesn't sound like much but in Colorado Springs that amounts to $135 after court fees. $10 for every mile an hour over.

I drive 135,000 miles a year for a living and I've also been a speed cop for a few years in the past. Let me say that RD's can work if you use your head. Don't lead the pack and don't bring up the rear and don't tail gate. If an officer has a choice of who in the the pack he will pull over it will be one of those three. With today's technology the only thing a RD does is tells you you have been clocked. Even in the middle 90's when I ran radar I could lock on your speed from 3/4 mile and you wouldn't even have time to lift. Also RD's do no good when you are being paced from behind with cetified speedo's. Nashville has a lowered tinted Impala sitting on chrome that patrols Nash metro and looks nothing like a cop until he lights up. On most highways 10 over is the magic number. Staying steady is the trick to making time, I drive a 69 mph tractor trailer and I set my cruise wide open and I pass the same triple digit big rigger four or more time in a 100 mile stretch because he is unsteady on the foot, 85 one mile and 65 the next. Just my opinion.

From what I hear the V1 is the best unit you can buy and its worth every penny. The only problem is that leaving it in the car while you are out is asking to have your window broken. They go for 400+ so anyone who knows what it is, and most people do, will smash your window for some drug money.
And honestly thats

Although it didn't save me from a Lidar trap on I-35 one morning.

I own a VCD radar jammer (Vehicle Cloaking Device). It worked great back in the 90’s, but is worthless now as it only jams X & K band.

Great story – I came over a hill doing 45 in a 30 and got zapped by a motorcycle cop. He pulled the trigger twice, looked at the side of the radar gun and slapped it like you would a bad TV, then fired again as I drove away. I still smile when I remember the look on his face.

Gotcha.
I'll be in Arlington, but I'll make sure to take the detector down before the border.

Ever got caught with that ? I hear tell them jammers are illegal, and subject to confiscation . That's the only reason I wouldn't touch a jammer, as a VCD is perfect when youre rollin' through small-town speedtraps.Plus instant-on immunity

Never got caught when I was using it.
It's been sitting in a box in my garage since '99.
It was fun while it lasted (expensive fun, costs more than a V1).
There's nothing but wide-band Ka and laser used around here now.

Sr7 & Zx3

I have them on my 06 maxima. No shot on cops having me speed. I get radar and laser jamming protection almost a few miles away! The cool thing is that when driving through virginia no one knows i have my radar because it is mounted in the cubby hole underneath the cd changer in the new maxs. I dont think you can get the sr7 anymore but the the zx3 for your 8500 is a must have! I love it !

I also think that there should be another category "my radar detector gives a me a false sense of security"

I have had them in my vehicles for years now and am so used to it that I feel naked without. But.... i have also gotten a ticket with it on. I tend to drive faster, particularly on the highway, maybe not a good thing. But its too late im hooked, gotta have one now that im used to it

Why do people still think this works??!?!?

Especially the laser jamming LOL

And the reason detectors are mounted where they are on the windshield is because they are more effective that way, not because other people don't have 'cubbies'

OH, and I have a bridge I want to sell you. GUARANTEED that no cops will stop you if you buy it from me.

I been in the DC, VA area for 9 yrs. and have gone undected. For the last 4-5 Yrs I use a Beltronic Laserpro 905 connected to an RX65 to keep up with the local troopers. Like Chernmax pointed, they are illegal in my area and you better have good VG2 detection.

These 'toys' work for me. It jammed two lasers again on Wednesday. One known photo red light cam and another time on I-95 from an unknown location (sort of too busy slowing down to look for the location).

The two times I got caught is when I had a rental car while out of town. I am a speed addict and need these toys as insurance. LOL.

It is not hard to find yourself driving 15-20mph over the posted speed limit in a Maxima. They roll very nice! Detectors are a great warning device and keep you in check! I have the Passport 8500 and love it. My only gripe about it is the sensitivity.

Well if A cop is aiming at a reflective part of your vehicle and my dectector is in the grill, why wouldnt that work? Seeing that a cop is either aiming at your headlights or liscense plate! Also the jammer does work, but the reason ppl still get caught with them is because are to dumb to slow down when it goes off! Only thing that suckis is that even if you have the best radar dector and the eyes like a hawk you still can be in **** because cops nowadays are using moving radar, or they call it pop radar. So the man will still get you if they want!

Well the way I understood it, your detector is in the dash. Anything that blocks it makes it less effective (i.e. your whole front end).

If the jammer worked, you wouldn't need to slow down because the cop could not determine your speed.

As for laser jamming, LOL again. You do realize that "jammers" have to emit a signal like the one used for detection. In this case, you are saying that your "jammer" emits a laser beam. hahah

This is unless of course I am completely off on how a laser speed gun works...

you are off on how they jam. the jammer emits a beam in front of the vehicle which interferes with any laser signal directed at the vehicle.

you have to slow down because otherwise the cop can still tell you are speeding, its pretty obvious if youre going 90 in a 60 or something like that.

And what exactly is this "beam"?? To interfere it should have to be the same type of beam as that used to detect, i.e. laser (which is what I said). I think you guys are full of the marketing crap they use to sell these things. Hasn't it been shown that NONE of these jammers really work?

I think there was a MYTH BUSTERS show last week on beating speed guns. I didn't catch it, but did anyone else?

And I'm pretty sure they can't ticket you for "speeding". They have to have some kind of number to put on there. Maybe they are allowed to estimate based on their experience, but I guess that would depend.

I just bought a escort 8500x50 from best buy I live in CA where summer stays longer than winter and having my radar mounted on windshield in summer time could become very hot...I would like to know if sunlight can damage the radar detector during summer? if yes then what should I do to prevent the sunlight? can it be mounted any where else beside windshield?

Don't you guys know that RADAR bounces off of your car as long as you wash and wax it everyday? Same way the F117 Stealth Fighter works!
