Hello,

My 89 Maxima started to leak coolant all over and I noticed the engine heating up pretty fast. The mechanic has told me that the freeze plugs are broken and need to be replaced. How much does it cost to replace them?

Thanks

depending where they're blown, they may not be much to replace.. email justinMC (maxtoy@usa.net) and give him a shout. I remember he had this problem just after christmas.

The mechanic wants to take out the engine and replace all the spark plugs and that is going to cost more than $1200. Should I just get the ones that are damaged or all of them?

Thanks

Odds are that if you've rusted through some freeze plugs, the others are probably in pretty bad shape. $1200 seems like a lot, you may want to get another estimate. Maybe another mechanic can replace the plugs without pulling the engine.

Years ago I had a freeze plug go out in a GM V8. I bought a repair plug from the auto parts store that was made of rubber and had a bolt in the middle of it. You remove the old plug, stick the rubber one in the hole and then tighten the bolt to expand the plug. I held up for more than a year, then I sold the car.
