hahaha the rich side lies in between woodruff and studebaker between alondra and artesia...take a trip- and see how quiet it is...ive been here almost 8 years and have never really had trouble..take frequent jogs at 10pm without any fear at all...
the only part that has changed around here is the riverbed..but the thing is the police are here pretty frequently...i guess it helps when the city officials are living nearby.

I think it's funny about how we're saying "Complain when it gets to $5/gal."
I'm sure if we look way back when it went from $1.20 to $1.90 for the first time and it was dancing around the $2 mark everyone was saying "Suck it up... complain when it gets to $3."

Ya'll sound like a bunch of whining babies. Suck it up and be thankful we have the opportunity to buy gas. If you can't afford it, don't drive. And what's all the crap about your "hoods" and the "man"? If you don't like where you live, MOVE!

That said, gasoline prices have been stable at just a little over a buck a gallon all through the nineties. A big scare then was when it would hit a buck twenty or thirty. Inflation has not tripled in the last five or six years. The price of oil is not increasing due to the natural nature of rising prices. If tomorrow's average price per gallon dropped to $1.60, I would still be complaining (albeit among some relief). I refuse to become desensitized to high gas prices. $2.00/gal is not cheap. Neither is $1.90, $1.80, $1.70.... Just because it's higher than that now, we cannot forget how horrible it felt the first time it cost $20 to fill the tank.
Despite my opening paragraph, I do not fully blame current politics (somewhat - yes). The biggest factor, I feel, is this exact desensitization. People are just sucking it up and dealing with it. We cry 'public transportation!' but that is simply not possible for the majority who do not work, live, and play exclusively in the city. Many cities don't even have it. We cry 'hybrids!' but those still burn dwindling fossil fuels (I'll buy the first hybrid that comes along, so long as its not unnecessarily luxurious, that burns E85. Assuming the gas milage of a Prius, one gallon of fossil fuel - mixed with seven gallons of ethanol - would get it over 300 miles! 300 miles for one gallon of fossil fuel - eight gallons of actual fuel. Talk about conservation! But I digress).
How can we fight is? I don't know. We really can't drive less. We've tried. Over the span of decades, I think the system will go through a serious revolution, but that won't come quick.
The other thing is the way gas stations are doing business. Though this could only contribute a small percentage, it is something. Many are starting to require people to prepay. This forces people to either (a) not fill thier tank, which is undesirable for the customer, (b) make two trips into the store, one to deposit a lot of money and the second to go get change, also undesirable to the customer, or (c) use a credit card at the pump. This is what most people do now. Use of credit cards costs the store money. A certain percentage of the sale. Undoubtedly, they pass that cost onto us. Additionally, most money made (historically) at convenience stores comes not from fuel sales, but from selling the candy bars and sodas and cigarettes and whatever other crap they sell. Well, if we don't go in the store, we don't impulsively buy that stuff. They're not going to take the loss of profits, no, they're going to raise their fuel prices to make up for it. Where I live, most gas stations are prepay only. There is one that I frequent that is not. It is also, generally, the cheapest.
Yesterday I bought six bucks worth of gas. It cost me $20.
it'll be a matter of time before people stop buying GM and Ford in major waves... when that happens Ford and GM aren't just going to roll over and die. There will be a switch to an alternative fuel.
I predict it will be an "American" type of fuel that Ford will come up with. That's what remains if they want to maintain fleet sales, and put the last nail in GM's coffin as well as compete with Honda & Toyota. It would be their best interest to develop and distribute this fuel source that even Japanese automakers will have to buy into. The only reason why I think it would be Ford is that the picture is looking grimmand they're the more innovtive company vs. GM.

Today on the news, a gas station owner in a rich neighborhood made the bold claim that he makes 1 penny per gallon profit, even though regular is over $3/gal.
I'm kinda curious about that--let's assume that he is truthful. I don't see how a business can be run on such a small margin, and would think that the business would decide to close. Yet these gas station owners are buying homes in primo neighborhoods, sending their kids to Princeton, and buying boats. What gives? 1 penny profit per gallon? Just doesn't make common sense.

My mom's 02 altima was a POS from the day we bought it.
$0.01 per gallon makes sense. At Sam's club they lose more than that per gallon by selling it so cheap.
you figure how many gallons they go through it adds up. that's why independant stations charge so much more. w.o all the store items they have less to profit from. and why stations charge the highest price for everything inside.

Hmm... Ok, we're at a gas station... there are 12 pumps to choose from. Let's say for some reason it takes you 5 minutes to pump 20 gallons, and there is a civic pumping 10 gallons, a SUV pumping 40, and 2 mid-size cars pumping 15. In a 5 minute span that's 100 gallons @ $0.01 profit/gallon, that's $1 every 5 minutes. That comes out to about $12/hr, $288/day if it's a 24-hr place, $2016/week, $8064/month. Even if we reduce those figures by half... $4k a month in PROFIT. That's not bad considering we're not taking into consideration snaks, cigs, and other stuff which may add another $2k monthly (or more if the cost of those goods is way low).
If your wife pulls in another $3k/month at some whatever job, that's a pretty sweet household income... you break the $100k/year mark. Not stinking rich, but you have fewer worries.

is that revenue or profit? and did you get to keep all of that? why are you still hanging around here if you're 20 and you can make that much? I know I wouldn't be wasting my time on teh internets.
For that gas shop guy, his revenue figures based on the model i provided, cut in half to compensate for slow times or lower prices, it would be $300k/week. $5k - $10k is what he takes home, where if he didn't run his own gas station and had 3 employees covering 3 shifts, then he'd be making $5k - $10k/month just by sitting at home and every now and then stopping by the station to check up on things.
I'm sure he'd love to be stuck in a pizza place for 10 hours straight, but he'd rather skip on the hospitality & customer service. Plus, what are your marketing costs for a gas station? $0?
Self-Serve
