maxima delivers 28 mpg again

This time I have substantial mileage to back it up, as the last time someone said 28 mpg is not typical and questioned the validity. With the K&N reoiled and in, I couldn't do 30 like last time. But then again, may have nothing to do with the filter, probably doesn't.

Total miles driven were 965

From the receipts, the gallons of fuel pumped were 34.6. So the 8 yr. old Maxima kicked-back 27.9 mpg, and there were some 80-85 mph bursts, as well as GW Bridge ramp traffic. Otherwise, almost all highway at 73 mph cruise.....with some local 55-60 state highway mixed in (maybe 70 miles of the 965). This car is stingy and as long as the fuel economy is good, I see no reason for any 120k service etc.

What gen Maxima do you have? Doesn't seem that great to me.

I have gotten over 30 mpg all highway driving with my VE-5. I think I could probably get 32 mpg if I totally drove it careful without "passing with authority" and checking things like tire pressure.

It's true. As long as you're not on a level surface.
On level surfaces the cruise control works best.

I guess to some people the MPG isn't important. It is to me. Half the reason I bought my Max was to drive something reasonably economical. The fuel estimate on the manufacturer's sticker indicated these cars averaged about 28-29 MPG on the freeway. Most of my driving is freeway, and I'm only averaging about 20 MPG. I get the same mileage from my 96 Cobra that's all stock except for 3.73 rear gears. The Cobra hauls alot faster and handles better, but the Max rides a lot more comfortably and quieter and my left knee gets a good rest from pushing a clutch pedal.

What's interesting on this forum are the negative comments or one-upmanship posts. I guess it's, well, to me, all about maturity. The purpose of my mpg posts is not to compare my mileage to yours, it's merely to point out that my Maxima has been on the road a full 100 months now, has 126k, and still seems to be able to do 28 mpg highway (it did 30 what a month ago). To me that's good because with everything else wearing out, you'd think it'd slip. But like D.R.E, even when it was close to da feet, it rose to its feet.....

As you guys know I started to like my Maxima again after I got a new car this year. For some reason, knowing that I can pull my $3600 8 yr. old car out of the garage and drive on a 900+ mile trip instead of putting the mileage on my new car, and have this old dawg hold up ok makes me feel good about the Maxima.

And so have brake jobs, axles, HID conversions, LEDs, stereos, wheel bearings, pleather, K&N filters, 235 tires, brake kits, etc.

The thing that is hilarious is the biggest threads are when someone goes from a Maxima to a European car--it's so off-topic but generates views, replies, and i.e. advertising value for the forum. What I find on those forums is that yes, there are many more rich kids there, but the level is more sophisticated. I'm glad I own another car, but I don't talk about it here, and the Maxima actually keeps me honest and down-to-earth!

My 68 Mustang has 47k miles on it, the rubber bushings are worn and cracked, when you stand on the pedal the manual drum brakes pull to the right, and the steering rack has just over 1/4 turn of free play in it. For some reason knowing that I can pull my 38 year old $1000 car out of the garage and drive the **** out of it for a whole 2 miles keeps me scared shitless.

sorry, couldn't resist

D

The thing is, most people are learning new this about this stuff and are interested. Gas mileage is too common for all maximas and no one cars
Now if you were getting 8miles per gallon this thread would be different.

The 68 Mustangs didn't come with steering racks. Those worn and cracked bushings and the manual drum brakes could be fixed for cheap by you in your own driveway, if you wanted to. Total cost would probably be less than changing both headlight bulbs in the Max.

frank, are you auto or manual? do you have a solid tube around your intake or is it the stock resonated tube to the throttle body? do you have a CAI, pop charger or just a K/N drop in? what type of exhaust mods, if any, do you have? i'm about to do a little updating to my mom's 95SE auto...i just want to steer it towards economy. what have the auto mileage masters been getting in terms of best mpg? thanks

bone stock engine no suspension mods avg 70-75mph w/ AT get 31.5mpg using Shell V-power (93oct.) just give it up, the VQ is efficient as hell and nissan conservatively rates the milage figures to the EPA. i love this car and realize the only way to get something better in fuel economy means getting a tiny tiny econobox like a Honda Fit or Yaris. screw that i want my Vitamin HP damnit!

just got 28.6 with no cruise, kept pace on the NJ TPK (75 mph avg., a couple outbursts to 90-95 tailing a SL550)...couldn't use cruise as traffic was too dense and inconsistent

car is bone stock with K&N panel, 1998 SE 5-spd, 126k

no mods at all except 235/40-18's on 18x8

seems to be the condition of the air filter that plays into mpg, can't find anything else except slightly lower speeds (70-72 mph) on cruise

plugs have over 70k on them (1998 SE) so don't think that really matters either...good luck!

i remember my 97 5sp got an ave of 25mpg around town commuting and 27-28mpg highway trips. it also ran a 14.05 down the quarter before i quit racing it. my mom's 95auto however, has never seen better than 22mpg around town. it sort of made my car look like a freak. nowadays, my G35coupe doesn't even see past 20mpg around town

What do you mean by "a/c tips"?

Turn it on. If you have no cold air, get the R134a refrigerant recharged.

Over 40mph, it is more energy efficient to run your a/c than drive with the windows down.

I think that is somewhat disappointing from a stock engine. I get 26.8-27.5 mpg driving all highway at 75-85mph. That is with every bolt on possible, wide wheels, and a heavy 5th gen.

Although maybe your mileage plays a factor

It's not disappointing to me. I got, you guessed it, 28 mpg this weekend. That included some 90 mph bursts on the NJ TPK truck-buses lane as I had a chg in plans and needed to get to the GSP south, yet I was already near exit 9 northbound. What evened it out were some state highway driving at 55-60 mph steady. I think it's laughable that we pay 3.40 gal now and still go to our shore houses and live it up. Sure, my credit card bill is considerably more every month, but it only comes once a month. It's like out of sight, out of mind, and I'm earning 5 pts. for every $ on gasoline anyway....
