I live in Massachusetts, and I can see the use of both kinds of station. My mother can't figure out how to pump gas for her life, so she always ends up going to a full-serve. My father and I stick to the self-serve stations, though.

In fact, right now Oregon's average is lower than Washington's which is self serve.

I am not a huge fan of full service. I have to admit, I would like to have a choice. Previously, I had a cardlock account (CFN) where I could pump my own gas in Oregon, but that is some kind of commercial account.
What I don't like about full-serve is in such a case, say NJ, the consumer does not have a choice. Along the lines of the fuel door and gas cap never being used, the attendant has absolutely no incentive whatsoever to do a good job, nor not drag his feet. Think about the mega plazas, do they have a mega staff? No. That means not only are vehicles waiting in line to get served, there are vehicles whose tanks are full with the nozzles in the tanks. The attendants will take their sweet time getting around to each car. They are not paid by the gallons they pump, the cars they serve, or the job that they do. They get their $6.15/hr. in NJ regardless. They're getting a 16% raise to $7.15 on Oct. 1,2006, for...you guessed it, doing the same job. The last time I got a raise anywhere near that was when I changed firms. Not for just kicking-back and waiting for October to come.

I myself would rather be in and out of a self serve asap. I have a coworker who says he will not use a self-checkout unless the store pays him to bag. Me, I'd rather get out of any store asap, and don't care if I have to checkout myself.

Dude, how would you like to make $6 a hour.. some people have to live off minimum wage.. you think your weekly cheque is very much with an awful hourly rate like that? It should be at at least $10 for people to have a chance.. especially if you have kids

Explain this theory, from what I know a person chooses their own career. Its not manditory that they work a minimum wage job, the only reason people do so is because they dont have enough ambition to get a real job. Also, having kids isn't a great idea if you are not financially stable. Not trying to be a ****, just throwing in my .02.

this is entirely retarded because it assumes that every single person in the us has ALL the same opportunities, which is the furthest thing from the truth. not everyone is able to (1) finish high school (2) go to college (3) go to graduate school (4) go to trade school, etc. etc., all for reasons that are not their fault in the slightest. so can they still just "choose their own career?" these people aren't asking for a handout, they're asking to make enough money to LIVE doing whatever work they can. the more fortunate in this country have an extremely warped view of poverty, your post is an example of that.

So tell my WHY these people can't do any of the things you listed? Also, I did not state that everyone in the US has the same opportunities, I know they dont.

Your future, life, and situation is what you make it. If you claim you dont have a choice other than your minimum wage and tv dinners then you arent making it happen.

Lazy people sink, opportunity has nothing to do with it.

no offense, but that's a totally ignorant comment. What do you know about a lack of opportunities? I doubt you've ever encountered any barriers and so I seriously doubt you can appreciate how it is living in a world where so many things are blocked to you. People aren't born equal, I don't think anyone doubts that. Why do you think near 100% of billionaires in the states are white males? There's a reason all your upper management are white males and not black females...

I somewhat agree with your statement but I know many black females with wonderful paying jobs. Also, my wife came from poverty and she CHOSE to not live her life like that. All this stuff about poverty is BS, it can be dealt with. Im sorry if you dont agree, anyways im not trying to debate this all night. Just simply stating my POV, im sure theirs many people here who would agree and disagree.

I agree with the people who are stating that opportunities are not the same here AT ALL. Even at my job they promote and favor people that they LIKE, not people who quailfy or work hard.

I want to go to college but I couldn't last year because I made a whooping $27K on my W2 form in 2003, they were looking at my W2 form from the year before. Now I don't even make that much and I HAVE to stay off the books to make money just so I can attend college and not pay the fu*%ing $15-20K a year.

A lot of people that I know that DID NOT EVEN qualify for scholarships and grants received them because they were foreigners. No one is born equal and no one has the same opportunities it's a given. It's who you know NOT what you know. I have worked for the most retarded people making 6 figures ASKING ME making 1/100th of their salary how to do their job. Look at all these celebrities and super wealthy people their children will never have to work a day in their life! Paris hilton doesn't even have a fu*king high school diploma! It's tough out there man, trust me it's real tough. I might have to work 2 jobs so I can pay off my 12K college balance, and then pay another 6 grand for the semester all out of pocket plus books and other expenses. Not only that we're paying nearly $4/gallon for gas. The world is coming to an end folks.

Now THAT is an ignorant statement. Coming from the bottom on up is one of the biggest reasons i can sit here and say your life is what you make it. Some people roll over and die, some of them get off their asses and make it happen.

Why Let Them Pump your gas at all? I get out and tell them to step away from the car. They can handle priming the pump but I pump my own in NJ.

I didnt know some states required gas attendents... It bothers me when anyone else does anything to my car, including filling it up.

Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid. Educate yourself and get off the minimum wage BS. When the road to your life takes a turn for the worst, remember you're doing the driving!!!

Trust me, I've been there, done that...

Oh and I pump my own gas, PERIOD!!!

I guess we could continue this, but there probably isn't any point. We'd really have to start looking at where you grew up, your race, etc... and the main topic was gas attendants being stupid and not using the holder..

Maybe I missed it previously in the thread - was there a reason the government passed legislation for only full-serve gas stations? Were a lot of gas stations blowing up or something?

Its really just a way for the state to create jobs and charge more for gas IMO. Letting them pump my gas really isnt any different then when i go to AC and hand it over to a vallet i guess.

So theres a question, how many of you let the vallet park your car rather than walk? It costs the same, so i let them park it for me but i dont usually like it too much lol

When I lived in NJ, my parents would ask for 87 and one time the guy put 93 in by mistake.

My older brother still lives up there anytime he fills his S2K he pumps it himself, but he has been yelled at quite a few times by attendants.

I like the self-serve myself.

They should be covered by "Shop Keepers Insurance." That should cover the damage and their incompetence. Hopefully you kept a receipt...

I'd let the vallet take the car if it wasn't mine.. my car though.. nope. I only let a select few friends drive my baby...

honest to god, I had an attendent almost put diesel in my tank once.. it was a dumb setup and the diesel pump was right next to the other ones. Anyway, the guy had the pump in his hands and almost put it in the car... I'm not quite sure what I would have done to hiim had he actually started pumping...wouldnt have been pretty though

the friggen attendent at sonoco today argued with me for two minutes because i asked for regular. He was telling me that my car will "blow up" if i dont use 93 octane and he used to be a mechanic blah blah blah. I told him regular was fine as it almost always gets prem and is stock. He continued to argue with me. I about got out of the car and sent him back to <insert country here>.....can barely speak english

The nozzle wouldn't have fit had he tried to insert it in the hole.

where do you get your info???

full serve is purely an insurance issue. the price goes up to pay the attendants pumping gas.

so your logic says that the full serve stations in my state pay more for their gas than the self serve ones? how about the sunoco that has both? do they pay 2 rates?

the oil industry lobbied "the government" so NJ is required to Full Serve

call me a cynic.. but the government wouldn't impose a huge, pain in the butt legislation without some group lobying them..

As said before, I only use self service. The only time I'll let somebody else pump gas for me is when it's really cold, or I have no choice; like at a lot of spots in NJ.

Yes there is that law, we covered that fact quite extensively. This is because of insurance, also extensively covered.

Would cost of insurance go up??? Here's my theory... Incompetent gas tenders... occasionaly put in wrong type of fuel, and paint chips + any other damage they could possibly cause to your vehicle... The company they work for will have to pay for damage to your vehicle....
thus tons of insurance claims... kinda oxymoronic if you ask me

I'm sure the cost of those claims is a lot lower than replacing gas stations which have blown up because of idiots pumping their gas... Although again, I have never heard of this happening.

Man I know in Kentucky this would never get passed, seeing as most gas stations are run by 13-25 YO high school dropouts who smoke more than they breathe.

Chern that ish is hilarious!! That happened to me more than once back in the day when I worked at a gas station.

And again yes, self service gasoline dispensing is prohibited by law in the state of Oregon.

I am 100% against letting gas attendants touch my car. One time I had yet to open the tank out of being on the phone and the dude popped it open with a bank card he had on him. I flipped the hell out man. There was no physical damage to my car but what do they care? They didn't pay for the car. So care free as if cars now a days aren't $30,000 investments.

I grew up in NJ - pumping gas was a great part-time job - you even got your windshield washer with a fill-up. Since most gas stations were also repair shops they were more considerate of your car as they not only wanted your gas business but repair & service as well. As a teenager I got to meet a lot of pretty girls and saw some good leg while washing those windshields. Since moving away I sure miss having someone else out in the cold/rain/ice/etc pumping my gas.
