AC pulley replacement?

I was wondering if I can replace just my AC pulley? It looks like it is wobbling and appears to be making loud whirring noises and knocking noise. I am going to my mechanic tommorow to check it out but was curious if anyone had run into this kind of issue. On the motorvate website the guy said his alternator pulley started making noises so he decided to replace the alternator. Any thoughts? I can get some sound clips if you need me to. BTW, I really think it has something to do with my AC compressor because the sound totally changes when the AC is turned on.

If your compressor needs to be replaced you will have to evac the refrigerant before doing so. It's usually better to replace the entire compressor instead of just the clutch.

its come to that point. The pulley froze and it just ate a belt when I was driving up the driveway from being parked on the street. I really need my car so i was curious as to how you would evac the refrigerant or if there was enough room to run a shorter belt without having the AC pulley in the way. SUCKS mang...

Thanks for the info so far. I will take a look again later though but any info will greatly be appreciated.

Well to evac you need an evac machine which you can't do yourself, but i think that on the 3.0 that belt only runs the crank pulley (engine) and one more for the ac compressor. So don't worry if there are just the 2 pullies on that belt that broke. Leave it off and you can drive it too, till u fix it. It's a maxima so u'd better fix it!

AC belt runs the alternator as well. Can't do without it.

Unless............. you replace it with a much smaller belt that allows you to bypass the AC while continuing to run the Alt.

little late but thanks anyways. I used a 33 inch belt and bypassed the AC compressor. You can install the belt with the AC compressor still attached to the engine (the pulley will not obstruct the belt path... fyi if you guys are interested in running a no AC setup to test out).

My 4th gen has the EXACT same problem.....sucks huh....plus i don't even have p/s because i can't find the right belt size with my underdrive pulley. My pulley is only hooked up to the alternator and tensioner, thats it. I'm also very interested in replacing JUST the pulley for the belt
