Guess that noise?!
Guess that noise?!
Problem!
The symptoms:
A lifter like noise (at a increased rate due to RPMs) sometimes happening at idle, shifting (with clutch in) from first gear to second gear at 2.5k RPMS, and sometimes at 2k RPMS. It would sometimes also happen in 4th gear with clutch and gas untouched and allowed to cruise. It will happen at any temp. range, but most often when just warming up. It also dissapears after 10-15 minutes of driving.
The sound:
Sounds EXACTLY like my injectors, the tick tick tick, but much louder.
What worries me most:
That this sound had popped up the morning after I went racing and somehow managed to miss 4th gear twice (top of 3rd gear to 2nd gear downshift = lots of redline.) But the thing is the sound hadn't shown up until morning. So for a good hour trip home, there was no noise. Which just.. puzzles me.
Here are some soundclips. This was done from neutral, with the clutch disengaged completely. It took a little bit of play around with the RPMS/Gas to allow the sound to show up.
Putfile - Engine noise 69
The sound was recorded from the driver's side strut-tower base, right next to the clutch fluid resevoir. You can hear the intake, the injectors, the exhaust, and then at 20 seconds and 53 seconds you can hear the metallic sound.
Putfile - engine noise above
This sound was recorded at the hood latch on the hood. This time the sound starts at 37 seconds, and intensifies at around 45 seconds.
Putfile - engine noise intake manifold
This noise is right at the elbow of the intake manifold. So the sound should be VERY clear. Here you'll hear the sound at 43 seconds, then again at 54 seconds. This time you get the chance to hear the difference between the normal operation, and then the sound.
What can it be?!
Another few notes is that the car rides.. perfectly. No RPM-flux during the noise, no power-loss, no CEL, nothing but that annoying noise.
I sent the sound over to a friend who is a V8 guy, and he said he had a similar sound when his exhaust gasket had blown. Could it be possible? I'm running the gaskets that had come w/ the kit, but they had been used in the automatic Altima, and then transfered over and reused on this manual Altima when I had the headers put on.
Oh, this is a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5SE V6 5-speed.
