It's a small sensor located down in the "V" of the engine below the intake manifold. It mounts to the block. It's there to "listen" for predetonation, aka "knock", aka "pinging." This means that the fuel/air mixture is exploding before the spark plug can properly ignite it. This explosion (as opposed to the desired controlled burn) can quickly destroy valves, spark plugs, piston rings...and stuff. Knock is generally caused by high combustion chamber temps which are caused by too much spark advance or an overly lean fuel mixture. When it senses knock, it retards the timing to get rid of it...

Forum search results for "Knock Sensor"

NJGuy,

Your post wasn't real specific......do you want to know how to fix it? Do you remember the ECU code you were given?, etc.....

Look in the ECU Diagnostic Code "sticky" post in the 4th generation forum, where you will find details on the knock sensor, code 0304, and the search results in the link above....

Just recognizing the pattern.....the next ? is usually "Can I fix it?" then "How much will it be?" then "How do I reset the ECU?" then "Why the hell am I being told to search?" and then "I hate bill99gxe"........I was just trying to stop the endless pattern...
