I just got a detector on my birthday....nice gift ehh Ok....I live in Buffalo and I'm driving to Boston for the weekend. What is the deal with using a detector? If I use it...and spot/am alerted by the detector, should I rip it off the windsheild in case the cop see it? What do you guys do? With the tab on the top of it I can slide it of the window in a split second.

BTW: Its a Uniden 737. I know its not top of the line but its not the bottom either. Paying 400 for a V1 is not worth it TO ME cuz I don't drive that fast. It has SWS(safety warning system), X, K, KA, and Laser. I know laser is kinda useless if its instant on but it may pick up on the guy ahead of me. Also....I have never seen a laser false alarm. If I was to get a laser I'd get to 65mph as fast as I could

Advice?

As far as I know the only state in the NE where the detector is "illegal" is Connecticut, but you shouldn't be passing thru Conn from Buffalo to Boston.

I believe the "illegality" has been challenged before in court in Conn. but I don't remember the outcome.

It is totally legal in all states except..

Washington DC and Virginia. If you EVER drive through these states, disconnect the radar and put it in the TRUNK! If it is in the passenger compartment, it WILL get confiscated! In Connecticut, it USED to be illegal, but that law was changed a few years ago. However, I find that on my drive to the Indian casinos on I95 from NYC, my V1 is useless for about the first 50 miles of that drive. I believe that they are either actively jamming me, or have some type of frequency broadcast coming from the utility poles with the traffic cameras on them every 1/4 mile or so. The V1 points to these poles as I pass them, so I know something is up.

Maybe the poles have radar on them to track your speed?
I've gone through similiar highways that did that.
Or maybe its television camera that thats the highways for the local tv stations just incase there is an accident or viewer wanna see how bad a traffic jam they'll have to face.
I've only seen them on 5+ lane highways.
