Painting Calipers

Iam gonna be painting the calipers on my 98, but the calipers look pretty rusted and corroded.

-Is there anything I can use to prep the surface before I paint it?
-Iam using Duplicolor Black Caliper Paint, is there a clear coat I can put on after the paint is applied?
-And how many coats of paint should I put? I was thinking 3 light coats.

Thanks

You might be able to use a good wire brush or even a dremel to get that surface rust off. I suppose it depends on how deep the rust goes.

-yeah use some kind of metal brush to get that rust off
-I also used a brake/caliper dirt cleaner (something like that) to clean them up before spraying
-3 light coats sound good! that's what I used for my calipers!

No clear coat is not nessasary, and I don't know how well it'll last there on the caliper since the brakes heat up to a high temperatures. I wouldn't do it, but that's just me. Just make sure you spray them with the special heat resistant paint!
I bought my paint from PepBoys; it was an engine paint up to 500 degrees!

I sand blasted my z32 brakes, but a decent wire brush should be fine.
Duplicolor caliper paint is good but make sure you dont spray the coats on too think or they will run. You should also use the duplicolor clear coat. It makes the caliper look better, gives it a slight gloss look and will help protect it when you want to clean it.

would it be possible to do it without taking the calipers off? how much time/work does it entail taking them off completely?

It would be a bigger pain in the *** trying to paint them while they are on the car, and it wont look as good either.

Unless you use a brush kit like G2 or FoliaTec

Which look better and lasts longer than spray anyways

It's possible, but I wouldn't advise it.

painting calipers

Seeing these threads are a few years old, just wondering how everyone's caliper paint jobs are holding up. I'm getting ready to replace the pads on my 07 for the first time since I bought it. Calipers look nasty and I want to paint them. What's best?

+1

I haven't done this mod yet, but when I do Im going with the G2. After reading everyones methods and reviews it sounds like the G2 is the best value and requires no removal of the calipers. The only downside I have heard is you have to paint kind of fast because the paint dries fairly quickly.

I had good luck with VHT caliper paint...so far at least.....it's been almost a week! There are some pics here:

Ive tried both spray and brush form by duplicolor. I prefer the precision of the brush type. You can paint em without removing em or masking off. Also Im not sure if its a placebo effect but I think the brush type is more glossy (bling factor).
