the correct way to set it is get out of the car, shut the door and lock the doors with the key...

if i get out of the car, lock the doors with the key, and then reach thru the window and unlock any of the doors and open it, nothing happens. but i know its at least partially functioning because its gone off before, just never when i tried to have it go off. is there anything you can do besides replace the whole thing?

I'm not sure if you did this or not, but for that to work, you have to wait 30 seconds or so until the SECURITY light on the dash turns off and then the alarm is armed and you could open the door and it should go off

not even 30 seconds. wait about 10 but i guess 30 couldnt hurt. you dont need to replace the whole thing just take it into a local alarm dealer and tell them the problem. (make sure you call first b/c i work at one of these shops and nothing is more irritating when people just walk in expecting to be helped when we're booked solid. a guy is actually coming to us tomorrow for that same reason. im not a technician so i cant really tell you what needs to be done but im pretty confident it can be fixed.
