What brand and grade of gas do you put in your Maxima?
#202
92 is the minimum that has ever been in my tank. the previous owner(dads freind) i knew and was **** about keeping receipts(he has a stack of gas receipts all of which show premium was used), 92 i will put in, in most situations but 94 if the price is good.

I haven't had any problems with 87 yet but I'm at 3,500 feet, so that's more like 90-91 at sea level. I've had some friends throw knock sensor codes when using 85.
And for those people that are saying they "can't afford" premium...it's like $4 dollars extra compared to the cheaper stuff on an average sized refill.

Shell puts in an additive which is supposed to clean out deposits in your engine (v-power). That's what I usually get.
I stay away from Exxon gas as they have high amounts of sulfur in their fuels. Not sure about anything special with Sunoco

Any lower, and a modern high compression engine will compensate (without knocking) by retarding timing. The VQ, for example, is one such engine with digital knock management. It won't ping if you feed it 86 octane, but you sure as heck aren't getting optimal performance out of the engine. Whether this is noticeable or worth the extra savings incurred by using a lower AKI/RON fuel, is up to the individual.

Holy Crap!!
Have you needed any kind of major fixes to the engine or transmission??

Depends how you drive and where you drive. In a cool climate at high altitude with nothing but easy highway driving on flat ground, you'd have no performance loss and you might actually gain mileage. In a hot climate at low altitude with aggressive stop-and-go driving up and down hills, you'd lose a lot of performance and mileage.

I use 86 octane when I can find it....
I was just given a $300 BP gas card from a client, so looks like I'll be using BP. Tried to get it the other day and the place actually converted into a Coastal. What a sham, the guy took seriously 15 min to fill me up, then he said cash only and couldn't give me a receipt. This dude in a Forrester was so pissed he just did a drive-off. What a weird situation in Jersey with the full service only there's no service.....

USING HIGHER OCTANE FUEL WILL NOT IMPROVE FUEL ECONOMY, PERIOD.

So, please explain how injecting more fuel into the combustion chamber with each stroke does not directly translate to more fuel usage.
Please also explain how timing retard does not directly translate to reduced power, requiring greater throttle inputs to acheive certain acceleration and thus indirectly translating to more fuel usage.
The best you can do is to show that many people will not notice an improvement in MPG or performance, given typical driving habits. That is definitely true. But unless lower octane fuels somehow regenerate themselves to compensate for their faster usage, it is stupid to say that octane has no effect whatsoever on mileage. For SOME people, there will be a very direct, very tangible, very measurable effect.
Unless, of course, you live in a universe in which you can inject more fuel into the cylinders without drawing it from the fuel tank. In which case, hey... More power to you.

I almost always use Sunoco becuase there are many around me, and alot of the times Sunoco has the lowest price in the area. Occasionally I will get gas from a Delta-Sonic carwash which is usually 2 cents lower then the lowest price within a mile (that is their guarantee) Ill buy Mobil if they drop to a reasonable price, which is rare, they are sometimes 20 cents higher than other places.
Im waiting patiently for 93 to drop below $3.00, its now at $3.04 at the Sunocos around here, its nice to know its coming down and not going up to $4.00

I would like to voice my new opinion on Sunoco gas. I think they are terrible for fuel economy but good for power. I actually feel the difference. Here is what I have to show for. I just started a new job and my commute is identical and driving conditions are practically the same every day with minor differences. All neglible.
Purchase Price Gallons Cost of Odometer Average

8/13/2006 3.299 14.68 $48.43 1431 26.49
Sorry that may be hard to read, but to make it a little more simple to understand here is the trend I got:
??.?? Sunoco ***
29.22 BP
25.82 Sunoco
29.96 BP
24.84 Sunoco
26.33 BP
26.49 Shell
*** Just filled up on Sunoco today. If my fuel economy drops again, I will have to conclude its Sunoco. So far, I've noticed my fuel indicator dropping faster than the last tank with BP.
From what I see, BP gets superb mileage!!
