i second the old beater import to learn stick on... light clutch in most of them, and cheap parts to replace if you are REALLY bad. The first car I ever drove/owned was a stick, a 79 toyota corolla. Slow POS, but dependable and easy to drive/repair

 

Most of the cars I've driven have been manual, I don't think its that hard to learn, and the maxima is certainly not the hardest to drive by any stretch of the imagination. Its geared pretty decently and has enough torque to get going in first gear even with sub-optimal clutch operation. Furthermore, the 3.5 has enough power in most areas of the power band to where gear selection is pretty forgiving. The hardest manual I've had to drive was an old VW camper in Germany. It had a 4 banger engine with less than 100 horse and if you didn't pick your gears perfectly or operate the clutch just right from a stop (especially on a hill) you were doomed.

Get one, you'll be fine.

 

I learned on a 1973 AMC Hornet. Straight 6 cyl engine, 3 on-the-tree manual transmission.

 

Didnt feel like starting a new thread should i get a 4th gen or a 5th gen max manual i want to either turbo it or supercharge it now iam also looking to buy a 300zx TT in the future.

I say buy and xA, xB, civic, mazda 3, carolla and spare your life.... too many youg kids get cars with power and they dont know how to handle it.

I learned how to drive stick on a 280z (Fun little car to learn on) and an older chevy 3500.

 

I feel like 16 is a bit young myself. I am 19 and I am sure there are people on here that think that is too young. I saved throughout highschool and split the car with my father. I know some kids say they bought it by themselves and there is no way but whatever. The maxima is a very quick car and I don't think my father realized how quick it really was when we bought it. Just learn on the max. It is a little tricky at first but you will eventually get the hang of it.

 

Oh I know, Im just sayin Ive scared myself a few times going from a mazda 3 5spd to a 5.5 gen 6spd. It takes time and if you do go for a 5.5 gen 6spd just take it easy for a long while. My first stick was when I was 21 so I wasnt learning to drive at the same time as driving stick.

 

Yep - I know plenty of kids that have mommy and daddy buy them a car and they either abuse it or wreck it. They have no respect for it and that is what kills me. A ton of highschool kids in Long Island and I'm sure many other places, wreck cars like its they're jobs. This one kid my buddy knows wrecked an 05 Maxima and then his daddy bought him a brand new fx35. What is wrong with parents today?

That is the truth. My parent's never bought me a car, or paid for insurance, or anything that wasn't on the hierarchy of basic needs (food, shelter, clothing) They always told me that if I want anything in life, I have to get it myself, no one else is going to give it to me. And that has stuck. Now that I have been on my own from 17, (I'm only 21) my parents always offer to help me with whatever, but I always refuse, because I know that I shouldn't rely on anyone else but myself for my needs. That way, when I screw up, I dont have to worry about biting the hand that feeds me, because I feed myself.

 

Thats a good outlook on things. I never really ask my parents for much but they do help a lot. Did your illuminas come yet?
