Windshield Crack Repair

Today on my way home from work a rock hit the very top edge of my windshield and caused a 6 inch crack. Before I got home, the crack had grown by another 6 inches. All of this is in the blue tinted part of the windshield. Can this be repaired or will it have to be replaced?

By how you wrote that post, it seems like a 12 inch crack would warrant a new windshield, but dont worry, they're not that much.....

I just got a quote for $317 after tax from Safelite. Apparently only cracks smaller than a dollar bill can be repaired. Does that quote sound reasonable for a replacement?

Is that for OEM quality glass?

yea, don't have your windshield repaired. I made that mistake and what a waste. I can't wait to replace the shield.

That sounds a little much, atleast for my area. Mine was only $180, and my insurance picked up the tab with no deductible.

I had my 5th gen front windshield replaced by Safelite for $160 cash. Mobile service too. Shop around, get a price, then go back to the first guy with the second price. They always work with you.

had my 4th gen windshield replaced for about $250 installed, in the Safelite(? can't remember) shop...waited 45mins for it. $300+ sounds a little high to me, but price likely varies from city-to-city, state-to-state.

this is if u don't wanna bother getting your insurance company involved.

I too had this done on my 5th gen a year or so ago. It was $250-ish...

If your insurance has a glass policy, contact them, but if not... for $250, take care of it yourself.

Windshield crack repair is almost a farce. Mine was smaller than a dollar bill, took it to a shop and they said they couldn't fix it, they said eventually the crack will go til it can't go anymore. Oh well guess I'll wait til it does that. Especially in WA state if it gets a rock chip and you replace it , it will get another chip 2 weeks later. Guaranteed.

Waiting definitely poses a safety issue.

+1 on contacting your insurance company first - see what they say and whether some/all of the cost of replacing your windshield can be covered.
