cops.. where do i post this?

sorry if this is off topic but the off topic discussion is locked and im not sure where to post..

if a person reports your license plate to the police for agressive driving, will they pursue it or how do they deal with that? I was told that if they don't see the violation they can't do anything about it, but will they flag the license plate or something? am I going to get a visit at home from some nice officers?

please don't flame if possible. There's two sides to every story, trust me on this one

a. how do u know or suspect you've been reported? were u admittedly being bad?

b. varies by state i'm sure...but it's gotta be hearsay from the giddy-up, minus any video footage as proof.

hearsay... I am sure someone can call you in and then if the police choose, they can send someone to witness the infraction... but based purely on hearsay, I doubt anything would happen...

and... IBTL... I'll let it go for now, but lock is imminent.

such a troublemaker you are...

besides, at most they may give u a call and let you know someone snitched on you about your driving...if complaints & reports become numerous, i'd think they'd make an effort to look for you on the road, maybe.

I know nothing of such situations

I know they do "Agressive Driver Imaging" on the beltway... but I have yet to see any ramifications

Uhhh....it's not hearsay if the original witness can provide sworn testimony of his/her accounts. That's prima facie evidence right there. It's only hearsay if the officer testifies in place of the witness. But the way states handle traffic violations also varies by state. Like in PA, the rules are looser than criminal or even civil court. Hearsay is admissible, officers are not sworn in, the state does not have burden of proof (i.e. you are presumed guilty and have to prove innocence, not innocent until proven guilty), there is no court record, etc...

The office probably will not do anything if he/she just got an anonymous phone call and/or with no follow-up, because it could be a prank and can not substantiate the caller's identity. The officer will probably encourage the witness to show up in person to make a written statement that can be pursued further. From that point, anything could happen and will largely depend variables from the quality of the witness to the mood of the officer to standard office policy.
