Tinting the max
Tinting the max
Hey guys, couple quick questions about getting my 07 tinted. Is $175 a decent price for lifetime guarentee? Apparently even if its illegal and an issue with the police they will replace it. Also, is there anything special they need to do with the rear window? I hear its difficult and also with the rear defrost, antenna, etc. Thanks!

Yep thats a good deal
ranges from $150-125 for "good" work.If the shop is good enough they'll be able to tint the dot matrix at the top of the rear window. If not then another way is black vinyl strip.
What % will you be doing? If 5% then black vinyl strip will blend in...if it's 20% then you can tell that it's there.
Here's my car and they went ahead with tinting the top. But of course I paid $300 from a reputable shop.
SolarWorks of Atlanta.
I like their work on the side windows because you cannot tell where the tint starts when the window is rolled down.
Many people have said it looks as if the car came that way.
28% tint continued to dot matrix

In my limited experience with tinting, I have found that going to a place that does it on-site with staffed tinters is the best bet. If they have to 'call the tint guy to come in his truck...' I'd find another place.
Also, if you want to get it redone don't listen to anyone that says taking the tint off the rear is hard. It takes a steamer, period.
Have had my rear windshield redone twice, now, no problems.

Buy it and either do it yourself or have some guy from the tint shop do it after hours for $20.

i'd go with 175$ that way if anything happens u can go back and they'd fix it with the warranty..
5% is the way to go IMO~
if you go to regular shop i'd say that's a decent price. i got my whole car/ sunroof/ visor done for $120 bcuz a kid i went to school with hooked it up, but he does a good job. a deal is one thing but if it's not good tint/ tinter it's not worth a cheap price
Sounds like a decent price for lifetime guarantee. Make sure they do a good job before you leave. Ask about dotrix for the rear window dot matrix stuff that's at the top, it'll look better with it, but it's not terrible without it. Hit up xlcrew for more info for that stuff, they sell it at his shop.
I tint for a living. Get exactly the brand of film they are using as well. and to offer a warranty even if its illegal is risky. We do no reciept and no warranty if we do illegal. rico got hooked up big time from his buddy. Normally, from a good tint shop using great film, like 3M, Huper optic, which is overrated, etc, you could be in the 200's easily. I use 3M colorstable, it installs ok, but thats not for you to worry about. It looks great and will out last the time you own the car. I personally believe nothing is meant to last forever, but I think its a great film. The dots suck on those years, best bet would be to either cut it short and paint it in, or you can hope that the tint shop will take the time to use some rapid tac, and heat the **** out of it and press them in, or use clear elmers glue...
AS for removal, a garbage sack cut to the pattern of your window, installed on the inside using simple green concentrate and letting it sit in the sun for about 30 minutes and get really hot, then get in the car and keep the door closed, start to peel the film off the glass with the garbage sack, and it should come off with out any glue. if it starts to leave glue, hopefully some steel wool will get it off other wise your defroster is messed because you will have to razor blade the window.
Good Luck man!

I could've gotten standard charcoal gray, Llumar, for $165 including a front windshield strip. The tint I got was darker than legal limit (17% versus 35%) and I got the windshield strip and sunroof with 5% and black vinyl on the rear window "dot visor" for $220 (Llumar Platinum Plus).
3m will usually cost more. LLumar has filed bankruptcy and if they officially do go under here in the future, who'e back the warranty? Shops usually don't carry the warranty, its the film manufacture. 3M is a billion dolllar corp backing up your warranty. BTW don't get the precut stuff from ebay its horrible.
Just my .02 to help out.

If the guy has good feedback, that must mean that it's good quality.

not necessarily, do you usually leave feedback after a year after it goes purple???
3M has a little ink stamp basically on the film that, when you get the tint should have a warranty with a alky pad to wipe it off with after you tint it, that way you know your getting what you paid for.

I am sure they do good work, or they wouldn't be in business, however, do you think a shop would like to see tons of cars come in for free strips and redo's if that were the case down the road? I doubt it lol.
Hey thanks for all the info guys. Much appreciated. The guy I was talking to who offers a lifetime warranty just did my girlfriends Scion TC for $150. Looks really good. There is about a 1/8" gap between the end of the tint and the edge of the window. This about normal? She got 35% all around which is probably what I will get.
She got the front windshield strip also, and on the Scion this has a little bit of the dot matrix that our rear windows have. He did a good job on that patch, so I'm assuming he shouldn't have any trouble with the dot matrix on the rear window.
With the paperwork he gave her it says he uses HP Smoke or HP Charcoal tint. Any idea of the quality of this brand? It's a fairly inexpensive tint job so I'm not expecting top of the line, but just don't want to hear any horror stories about having it change colors or peel off, etc etc. Thanks again!

Just had my wife's '07 tinted with 30, 15,15 Llumar for $180. Never had any fade or problem with Llumar. My '87 Cherokee, which I just sold, still has the original Llumar tint and no noticeable fade. Great for this Florida sun.

Had my Max tinted yesterday morning. I had him tint over the dot matrix and it looks good. Glad I went that route. I posted some pics here:
