Which Max to buy

I am new to this group and need your help in finding the right Max.
My primary use is as my daily driver/ sales call car so reliability and comfort are important. However on weekends I run SCCA autocross. We have a 91 SE-R now but I need a larger car, hence the Max.
I want a 5-speed, but which years, models have the best suspensions, brakes and engines?
Any comments would be appreciated but I am looking at 2 to 5 year old cars.
Thanks

I think the Nissan gained the rear axle in the last couple of years? Anyway, until the 2k1 I was not happy with the design since it was not the best design for autocross handling. They did a tweak to the 2k1 model to help the handling.
Maybe some of the other owners can say how they made their recent rides handle better.

3rd gens have independent rear
not this beam 4+ have...not all 3rd gens though, ask some of those guys.
as for 4th gens, skip the se, go w/ the gxe i think...it's in a different class for autox.
the se and gle (think the gle) are in GS, where it's tough to compete, though the other model (gxe or gle i forget, check the soloII rulebook) is in HS i think! (ES?) where it is much more competitive.
otherwise, get any and move to DSP (where i am) you can do ok but not place 1-2 often if you have a competitive club.

nope you're wrong...
se's are GS...i used to run there.
4th gen: 95-99
5th gen 2000+
3rd gen: ?-94 w/ some different engines, etc there...
i think some of the 3rd gens w/ the better rear suspension (independent) and done right can do well in DSP but not stock categories.
as for stock categories, all the maxes that run in HS are pretty equal (well gle is automatic only, gxe can be obtained in 5-speed)

Third gen is 99-94, fourth gen is 95-99, fifth gen is 00+. If you're going to keep it stock, the maxima is not going to be competative, so you might as well get whatever car you like and just go out to have fun. Any 92+ SE is in GS, all others are in HS. SE's have stiffer springs. Third gens have independent rear suspensions. I don't think it's going to make a huge difference in a stock class, just buy what you like. In my region we're doing pretty good in STS with modified suspensions. You might be able to keep up in stock with some good tires, but you're not gonna be getting any trophies
