Okay, so I don't have school tomorrow and I was thinking I would try and make a heat shield to try and cool down the area around my Stillen intake. SCC did it in their SE-R and they were able to drop intake air temp by 20 degrees. It looks pretty ghetto, but I don't show my car so I really don't care. Has anybody here tried this? I would really like to know what materials you used, and see any pics if you have them.
Thanks,
Brandon.

I had the same idea....

but ugh.....It seems that getting the shield tight enough will be hard...I would say installing a cooling fan works better?.....ummm....but someone here said that does not work.......you can use something like a power supply fan....
if you want to build a shield......use either aluminium or ABS plastic.
But I will go with aluminium...since it sinks heat better...

when i had my cone filter, i covered the
top portion of it with a cheap piece of
aluminum sheet. it does work in terms
of shielding the radiated heat. couple
of times i would pop open the hood to
feel the shield and it was quite warm.
then i stuck my hand under to feel the filter
and it was cool. but now i have the cai.
one thing to keep in mind is make sure you
clear all of those sensor wires around that
area. i was not careful and one of the wires
was touching the aluminum sheet. eventually
it burned off the insulator and shorted
the wire. my car just stalled in the middle
of the road.

I can drive my 99 a couple hours. Then pop the hood and the intake is cold to the touch. Is this normal? The stock air intake blows air on the intake from below.

this is totally normal. Not only does the cooling air from your stock intake lower the temp, but your filter is constantly moving air and is made of a material that does not retain heat. I have the stillen and removed the entire stock mess, mine sill stays cool. The purpose of the cai is no really that the unit itself stays that much cooler, it is that the air it is drawing in is much cooler and therefore denser, giving better combustion and more power.

Heat shield

Has anyone tried to make, have had someone else make, or really know how to make a decent looking heat shield for a cone intake? are there really any noticed benefits w/one? check out this one at http://doc.schdist42.bc.ca/bob/index.html. any suggestions would be helpful. thanks

Ghetto Cool Air Project

I gotta admit it looks ghetto to the max, but I'll be damned if it doesn't help:

It cost me about $5 in parts total! I think we have a little more space to work with in our engine bays, but this should give you some ideas.
