greetings to everyone out there in maxima land, i have a question for ya tonight. I just installed my ss y pipe today and there is a slight ringing noise when i acc , i know some noise is to be expected . i looked under the car to inspect it to see if there were any metal touching the pipe there was it was the heat shield from the cat right on the pipe i was wondering if i should bend the shield off the pipe or leave it be or any other suggetions u might have for me would be appreciated. thanx

The Y-Pipe isn't hitting anything, it is the hanger that is hitting. Read on....
The thing you have to bend out of the way a little bit is the portion of the Y-Pipe hanger that extends over the screw that holds it in. HARD TO EXPLAIN, but as you saw n my web site, a picture is worth a thousand words.
It will only rattle against the Y-Pipe under moderate to hard acceleration, and bending it slightly out of the way cures the problem completely.
I have powerbraked the Maxima while on a lift, and you can see why this happens, and why it does NOT happen with the stock Y-Pipe. When you accelerate, the Y-Pipe moves DOWN and BACK, proportional to how hard you are accelerating. It is the "down" motion that can cause the hanger to rap-tap against the bolt holding the hanger in on the passenger side of the car. The reason the stock pipe does not do this is because the flex portion is MUCH MUCH longer than the Stillen or Cattman pipes, and the flex absorbs the Y-Pipe motion before it can bend nearly enough to hit the bolt. I don't quite understand why Stillen and/or Cattman cannot make their flex pipe as long as the stock one. There is a very good reason why Nissan spends hundreds of millions of dollars on R&D. The whole point of the Y-Pipe is to eliminate the pre-cats, not change the flex length. There is a damn good reason it is so long.

OK, there's a difference between ringing and banging/tapping. A slight ringing is normal. The flex portion will make a very slight "bees-in-a-can" sound under acceleration, but should not do it during cruise. The only thing you can do to cure the ringing is to wrap the flex portion with some header wrap.

i dont understand why it makes a ringing sound like that i like the growl but that ringing makes the car sound tinny someone at cattman should do somthing about that . but between the y and the cai i love the power i took it out on the southern state today dam i was zooming. hey greg do u see the difference with the r/t cat?
