I just recently put a For sale sign on my car as well. Wrote all over the back window. Infact, some guy is looking at it today...
What college are you going to? Why can't you keep the max? You can always park it somewhere in Staten Island near your house and not worry about it,, even take the insurance off... My reasons for selling my car is just I feel it's time to upgrade to something I can put mods on and not worry about it breaking down any day...

The reason they tell you not to take a car is b/c most campuses don't have enough parking and there's no way you can drive to classes on almost any campus. Having a car freshman year means that you're gonna be the guy that everybody asks for a ride. You also spend more time hanging out and "bonding" if your relatively immobile from campus. I had to leave behind my Prelude last year b/c I had to go to NY for school and I drove a beater '90 Accord there since it was 1000 miles away and in the middle of nowhere. I somehow managed to put 10K on the car while at school and people were borrowing my car all the time.
Another issue is if the campus is urban, people will scratch the crap out of your car b/c parking is limited and streets are narrow. My brother(Shadow) had his car hit several times while he was parked at Georgia Tech. At Cornell, a drunk idiot walked across the hood of my Accord. You also have to worry about people breaking into your car or stealing it b/c most campus parking isn't that close to your dorm and you can't hear an alarm go off. Having a car does let you get an off campus job and lets you get out but its a lot of hassle and the costs are pretty bad. Maintainence gets to be a hassle since you don't have any place covered to keep it or wash it.
If you really want a car at school, then keep your car. A new one isn't going to impress anyone that much and it lets you keep your costs relatively low and even though you like it, getting a scratch isn't as bad as on a brand new car. If you get a new car, make sure you have a good/safe place to park and enough money to send it to shops for maintainence. Good luck.

My experiences are totally different... I've had my car ever since I've been at college. It wasn't extravagant freshman year, parking was a little far but never too inconvenient, and I would say at least half the freshmen at UF have a car. I live off-campus now, and it would be hell without a car. If you live on an urban campus, it may not be such a good idea to take a car. UF is halfway between urban and the suburbs... you can get along without a car but you wouldn't want to. If you're going to an urban campus and living in a dorm, I would say leave the car. If you're going to live off campus later though, and it's not urban where you live, you're definitely going to want a car.

Find another place to get edumacated. But if you do go, I would sell it and by a newer model later on. NO sense in letting it depreciate another year while you can not drive it. Sell the car, put the money in an index fund. Wait and buy another one.
Good Luck

I think whether you keep the car depends on whether you will really have a need for it at college. If all you will do is park the car and drive it to go to the supermarket, then you don't really need one. But if you live close to home and want to visit the folks on the weekends, if only to get a nice home cooked meal, then I can certainly see how a car would be useful.
But yes, I agree that there are certain schools where owning a car is just a hinderance, since there is no parking and everything is close by walking distance. One such school is UC Berkeley. My brother goes there and has had no need for car for the past three years.
