Well, I finally ran with a new WRX. It was a race with a friend with no cares either way as to who was the victor. But, the loser had to post to maxima.org, impreza-rs.com, and our local internet car club board, tamparacing.com.

Well, it was more or less a dead heat. We were never able to get a light (we were going about 10 mph in a 55 mph zone trying to wait for them to change....) but we did do quite a few 2nd through 4th gear blasts. The WRX was modded with an electronic boost control set at 14.5 psi and the Max has Cattman Y pipe and Place Racing CAI. In every case when we hit it, the Max would jump out about 1 car length immediately, then would just stay there. Neither one of us could pull away from the other. We ran like this about 5 times up to over 100 mph and the same thing held true everytime.

I was fairly impressed with the WRX as its power on the move is better than I thought it would be. With a few mods, his car will be able to suck the paint off Mad Max. But, all in all, the family truckster Max held his own against the rally bred WRX.

Interesting. As a package deal, I'd rather have the Maxima...but of course, I'm biased.

The Max is definitely more luxurious and mostly stock to stock in a straight line its a toss up. Its also much easier and much cheaper to make a WRX fast.

But, the handling of the WRX is in another league altogether. I can assure you of that from my test drives and a ride I took in the car I raced.

It will leave your shorts soiled

Larry-

Good racing. I'm glad to hear is was a dead heat. With the boost controller, he should be a few tenths quicker since he isn't bleeding boost in the upper rpms. I have yet to come across one on the street. From a roll, I think I'd do fine, but from a stop I'm toast (if he knows what to do).

Actually...

I'm impressed with the Max...I figured even a stock WRX would dispose of a modded Max, but a modded Max hanging with a boosted WRX? Wow...nice driving.

I hear you can take them on the high-end...since there is not much substitution for displacement.

Yeah...it was fun. A stock one from a roll shouldnt be a problem at all. That extra 4-5 psi of boost at high rpm and faster spool up makes a pretty big difference!

Needless to say, I am getting torn apart on the Subaru board

The very first Friday that I had my 2001 AE I went and raced it. I raced a blue WRX turbo. It was a very good race. Suprisingly I had him off of the line. I did not pre-load the tranny, nor did I shift it manually(auto, can you tell? ) He cought up to me and barely beat me by half a car and the end of the 1/4 mile strip. We were both suprised to say the least. I now know that if I would have shifted manually I could have probably held him off. But it was a good race for both cars. I believe that the WRX's have much potential for speed. Just my 2c's

Damn talk about **** hit the fan!

LOL, i read that whole post and that was awesome. I can totally see the senerio in my head. I saw a wrx against GSX eclipse the other night and it seemed to me that even with all wheel drive they don't get rolling fast enough from a dead stop. and the max has the power of touching the gas and your gone...no waiting around for some spooling power. BUt tis so true, to make a WRX go fast is so easy/so cheap in comparison to the maxiam. I want them both =D
