hey, I couldn't get my oil filter off when I was changing my oil today (need to pick up a strap wrench). I had 4,500 miles on the last oil (always mobil synthetic) and it was gone in under 2 months so I don't think it will hurt to leave the filter in for another 3 months.

Will my maxima hate me for the above sin?

Oberservation: I have a HUGE hole in my stock y-pipe's flex section - did this help me or hurt me? the new (old) one is going in on monday.

i would definetly change the filter, most people who go with LONG oil change intervals at LEAST change the filter in between, esp. the way you drive. and that hole would hurt you a little because it would lower the exhaust gas velocity.

but does the filter really need to be replaced, I drove 1,000 of those miles in one weekend (maxus), and the rest in a short ammount of time. The oil I took out looked clean still. also, if I take the filter out now then I will need to replace the oil already.

anybody else have input?

Dude definitley change that bad boy

You can use a pipe wrench to take it off ( one of those large adjustable wrenches). Take care of your engine and it will get you where you are going.

you won't have to replace the oil if you change the filter now, people change the filter twice for every oil change, on long intervals, the filter is towards the top of the oil pan and if you are fast you should lose more than 8 ounces of oil if any. DO IT

In terms of lab tests and my driving habits [high mileage....>15k per year, car runs at least 20 mins EVERY time, etc], this isn't true up to 10k miles on ULX-110 oil with a Mobile 1 oil filter. I have also gone 9k on ULX-110 oil with Mobile 1 oil filter.

Also, Shing's car has gone 8k on 1 Nissan OEM filter with similar driving habits.

My dad's 99 TL (similar driving habits) went 12k on one Baldwin (Amsoil's OEM) filter......

For theblue's driving habits as he's described, it appears that it won't hurt to go another 1k or 2k on the same filter......

The proof is in the spreadsheet results.....

On a soon to be updated version, we'll discover that frequent stop/short mileage driving habits do seem to have a significant effect on oil filter life, but not necessarily oil life.....so stay tuned!

theblue.. did you do your last oil change? well if you did.. did you hand tighten it?

always remember to rub oil over the top of the filter and only hand tighten it.. don't use an oil wrench to tighten the filter

It's good to just change it but if you leave it in, it will probably be good another 2000 miles.
