Birth 5/87, death occured on 9/14/2000 with some 222,460.8 miles on the odo. The cause of death a blown headgaskets, detonation, a burnt #2 piston with a destroyed #2 spark plug, a crack only the #2 plug hole in the cylinder head. This now free's me up to build that turbo engine. Right now I have 2 choices on engines, the SR20DET or a VG30ET. The only thing is my car was 3355lbs with me so it would take an extra 50hp at the wheels to make my car compeditive with other SR20DET engines. However the VG30ET is perfectly suited for my car. Either way my max is gonna comeback stronger than before. The reason for doing this is I would only get $300 for the car now. If I parted it out I would probably get about $600-800 for that. I have put so much into the car to lose that much. Now if I bought another engine for $500 I could sell the car for around $1500. But what would be the fun in that.

I didn't realize the '87 was that heavy. Just about as heavy as a 5th gen. How much will the engine and install cost together?

Condolences

Sorry your max is dead. Totally agree with you on rebuilding it. Make it a straight street racer now. Can you rebuild the old engine? you could go high performance everything! Viva la maxima!

The VG30ET runs around $500-900 depending on mileage. The install might be around $1k or less labor wise. I also have to consider if I still want the auto or do should I do teh auto to 5spd swap. I'm leaning toward a 5spd swap because it would be able to take more power from the engine. All I would have to do is a clutch upgrade, where as with the auto it would have to be rebuilt.

Id say go with the 5spd upgrade

it will be most beneficial to you iin the long run. And if youre going to go all out with it. Id say get it to the way you want it and will like it the most, and less costly than having a transmission rebuild. Man your car had lots of miles on it 222k you said. Dang mine only has 138k, long way till I get up there. Its amazing how these engines last so long with so much mileage on them.

Go with the 5-spd!

If your going to do all that work, i would go with the 5-spd. I first regetted doing it because of all the trouble i went through, but just see my 1/4 mile drop about .7 of a second, it was worth it. I have a Clutchmaster's Stage III clutch in it. But if you do keep the Automatic, do a level 10. Good Luck!
