Anniversary Edition shift knob - they warned me, but...

Someone mentioned that the Anniversary Edition shift ****, in all its matte finish aluminum and leather glory, becomes a scratchy mess after a few months. When I saw it on an Anniversary Edition SE, it seemed pretty solid to me. So I bought one.

Ouch.

Yeah, at first it'll look fine for quite a while. Then, slowly, you begin to notice these little scratches. Eventually they get worse until you begin to see that this matte finish look is really just a coating. This can be scratched away to reveal a very bright metal. I would think after a year that it would look rather pathetic. Not exactly a tribute to the Anniversary 5th generation Maxima.

I'm going to look into doing some kind of coating over it before the scratches get worse. In the meantime, it's baby touch from now on. Also, I learned to put a sock over it when doing any kind of work on the dashboard.

Just thought I'd help emphasize the warning I should have listened to. Still looks great (for the moment). If I can come up with a protective coating that doesn't detract from the appearance, I'll keep it.

He's right...but clean nail polish is shiny. Get some Krylon matte finish or something and spray that bizatch a few times (waiting at least 30 min in between coats on a warm, non-humid day). That may help!

Thanks--I agree. Clear nail polish would be too shiny (unless they have a matte finish available). Krylon is good tough stuff. I'm hoping I can do enough coats to protect against scratches while not losing the nice look of the aluminum finishing.
