Ext. Warranty ?'s

Just purchased a 2K1 SE 2 days ago, and am glad I've found my new home. Had a 98 Passat 1.8T (don't ever get one) and am glad to have gotten rid of it and into this car.
Now the question....the ext warranty saved my a$$ on my Passat and I'm wondering if it's worth it for the Maxima. I'm looking for info as to the reliablity of the cars from the people who care the most about there cars (all of you)! So if you could post whatever problems you've had over the years, and whether they were covered by warranty or not i would appreciate it. I am ecspecially interested on those of you with 3,4,5 year old cars.
Thanks, and hope to be around for a long, long time!

An extended warranty just extends your hassle when the dealer is a b!tch about warranty work to begin with.
I dunno, I wouldn't buy one. My max and all the Nissans that my friends and family have owned have been exceptionally reliable.

bought one....love it....
I bought a used 96 SE and bought the "platinum"(yeah, sounds special, don't it?) extended warranty that extends until it hits 100K. Being a used car I really wanted it since you never know what's been going on, even with carfax.com and all that. It's been a blessing so far. Timing chain (dealer told me it had been serviced at 60K...wrong), starter, and a whole d**n monthin the shop for 'inhaling metal' pieces and I've paid $150 total. And i'm good for another 15K, too. Since yours is new I don't know...you'll know what you've done to it...it was the element of the unknown about the previous owner that drove me to buy. Plus I just put it all in the finance package and it's costing me like 25 cents a month
Sorry so long, hope it's a help. (do agree with mzmtg, though...if your shop is a bunch of strokes then it'll just be a bigger pain in the @$$)

Hey,
Congratz on the new purchase!!!
now re: ext warranty .. I'm kind of regretting this purchase b/c I've already voided part of mine since I've added on a y-pipe ... my coilovers will void the suspension part of the warranty ... HID's will void that part ... SC which I intend 2 get within the ext warranty period will void everything else ...
if u r going 2 mod your car? Don't bother ...

Well we bought my Maxima new in 97 so its 4 years old and we have yet to have a single problem. We have the extended warranty but have never used it. Maximas are generally very reliable cars but quite a few sunroofs have failed and they aren't cheap to replace. And as was mentioned above, mods void the warranty so if you plan on doing any serious mods don't bother with it. You can always buy it later before the factory warranty runs out. Or at least thats how mine was. I guess they still do it the same way.
Maximas are pretty reliable. I would say skip the extended warranty. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any common repairs that would add up to the $1000 cost of the extended warranty. Alternators and starters have been known to go south prematurely, but that's in very few Maximas.
Get this....when my family purchased a 91 Camry new, the dealer talked my dad into getting the extended warranty. What a waste! The car has been running like a champ for over ten years now and has never been to the dealer for warranty service. So, I would say for a similarly reliable car like the Maxima, the extended warranty is not necessary if you maintain your car well.

DaddyD-Lux...It's up to you on the warranty. I have just a tad over 40K miles on my 2K Max with no problems what so ever. The car has been at the dealer for some recalls like the TCM's and the Brake Judder, but other than that no problems at all. If you keep up with the oil changes, tranny fluid changes, etc. you shouldn't have any problems...5th Gen Maximas are generally pretty reliable.

I was thinking of getting one for my max...
I have 57k miles on it now and remembering my 93 SE, if I knew, I would have gotten the warranty even though the car had 84k miles on it. I spent nearly 2.5 grand on repairs, tranny, suspension and other things.. I would only buy a warranty that covers the major, more expensive parts. I think an extended warranty is only good when buying a used car with quite a bit of miles on it. Sort of like insurance against any problems the previous owner of the car had. With a new car you are the 1st person to own it, plus there is the factory warranty which should last you a good amount of time. I say don't worry about it for now. After like 30k miles, if you have been having some problems, think about the warranty then...
