Did you pay sales tax when you bought your car in Canada or when you registered it?

I am thinking about importing a car from Canada and am trying to figure out if it's worth it or not. I don't want to pay sales tax twice. Thanks a lot for your help.

Hey Bud,

Not sure how the taxation on your side works .. but you will probably have to pay taxes when you buy the car ... but you will 100% be eligible to claim a refund on both the GST & PST (7% & 8% respectively).

No double taxation will occur b/c the refund will be available for you.

Thanks a lot dude, I just found a great site on that material too!

It looks like a fully loaded 2002 6spd maxima is going to cost me a grand total $24,100 when it's all said and done. Plus a rentel car and gas .

Ya we got the 2k2 Max. As for price, the sticker price on a fully loaded auto Max at my local dealer is roughly 38 000$ which works out to around 24 500$ in American currency.

For the tax issue, it all depends where you buy it. If you purchase it as a private sale, you only pay the federal tax (8%) when registering the vehicle. When you purchase a car at a dealer, the dealer charges you 7% provincial tax (or whatever the provincial tax is in your province) and on top of that you still have have to pay the 8% federal tax when registering the car.

Hope this helps

In the past I was looking at getting a car from Canada also.
Check with the US custom office. If I remember correctly, you pay either a 2% import tax on your vehicle or 4% about $1000 (US$) to bring the car to the US.
As far as local canadian tax, I do not know how it applies to a car that being exported to the US. Check with the Canadian consulat.
Hope this help...

Thanks for the help, the Tarrif tax{import fee} is 2.5% on cars.

Nick, after I get my new max I am going to get a 6spd Infiniti G35. I will probably buy it next summer. I need something new to hold me over until then.
