2002 SE Good Price?

Hi all!

I am currently pricing a 2002 SE. It is fully loaded without the Navi. The sticker price is 31,176, they are giving me 14,000 for my truck (97 F-150) which brings the price to 17,176.

The dealer says that by playing with the price for my truck, they are at invoice on the car. Now, I realize the work and all that goes into selling a used vehicle, however the dealer says he has a buyer for my truck already (their first mistake).

I priced the same car on carsdirect.com and got the MSRP of 30,631 (no dealer options), Invoice of 27,806 and a carsdirect.com price of 28,106.

Dealer called this morning (all this happened last night) and said that 17,176 was the best he could do, I said that I want 16,500. He said no...but I think he is thinking it over.

I have a high confidence factor because:
1) He has a buyer for the truck. This information does not benefit me in anyway, if anything he should have made me think that he will have a tough time selling my truck.
2) He is already going to make about $2000 on the new car and $1000 on my truck.

What do you guys think? Can I safely go lower, or would this price rock?

hehehehe

If only it were that simple. If I don't get this one, I plan to order one in a few months after my truck sells.

I haven't heard from the dealer all day.

I would think that 30,500 is a good price for that car.

Re: 2002 SE Good Price?

It is always hard to figure value when trading in a vehicle. I would focus in on the new car price and then guesstimate what you think your car is worth vs. the burden of selling yourself--that is, consider the two separately. Although the 2002 is more upscale now, my dad, my bro, and myself, all got our maxima's for about $500 above Dealer's Invoice. Now, since it is a new model year, I'd have to say that $1000 above DI is appropriate, factoring in that this will almost certainly be 5th Gen's last hoorah and Altima will be stealin' mucho Maxi thunder. $2000 above DI is insane for any Nissan IMHO. With the recession (here now or upcoming) you are the one with the power... It never hurts to wait it out another month when new Altima's, new 6 speed maxi's and other 2002 models flood the dealer lots. Good luck.

Good advice!

I went back tonight when the lot was closed, fortunately the one I want was there however it was missing an option that I was told over the phone it had (TCS).

I think I will speak with him this week and see if we can't find one or wait on one without the Meridian package but with the TCS. They had about 7 with no leather, no TCS and no Meridian for about $28,000, I am wondering why he didn't offer to deal with me on one of those sense we didn't agree on the loaded one?

Salesman: Will you pay 31,176
Me: No
Salesman: Well we have 8 others on the lot...

Does this mean they may deal with me on the Black loaded one? I don't think I will take it from the responses I have gotten and the fact that it has no TCS, which I consider more important.

But my girlfriend thinks, they won't give me as good a deal on my truck for one of the lesser ones.

OK, now I am a little confused...are you guys saying that 30,500 is too high or 31,176? Keep in mind that I am trading in.

Thanks bluefish!

I wish you were closer, you sound like a competent and professional salesman. Jumping from dealer to dealer is the only way I have found to secure a 'decent' price.

I realize you need to feed your family, the price I am willing to pay is 3% to 5% profit...no more no less.

Since you are a Nissan dealer, could you tell me what a fair price would be (and maybe a good dealer in NC)?

2002 MAXIMA SE
Exterior Color: Super Black
Interior Color: Frost Leather
Base MSRP*: $25449

- Automatic Transmission
- Leather Package $1499
- Bose(R) Audio System (In-Dash) $1099
- Meridian Edition(TM) $399
- Front Side-Impact Air Bags $249
- Power Glass Sunroof $899
- Traction Control System $299
- Carpeted Floor Mats $79

Total MSRP*: $30512
Total Invoice: $27,806

you have to remove the truck from the equation

Why are you letting him make $2000 on the sale? I'm not even sure they make that much on a 330Ci, which you have to wait to purchase. I know that on 1999's they took as little as $150 profit after all is said and done (**** dealer holdbacks), and the newspaper ads seem to imply the same for 2001.

The thing about car buying is to remember you are the boss, don't get emotional. Get his best price, act like you might go for it, and change your mind and walk out. You can either come back to that price, or, take 10% off of it and use it as a starting point at the next dealer. Don't fall into the trap that it's "only $40 more per month" if I don't try. Good luck.

p.s.--if you like theatrics, bring your wife/girlfriend. tell the dude you think the offer is good, then have your woman VETO it because it's too high. this one is fun because if your sig. oth is attractive the price will come down. :-)

Thats funny, my girlfriend and I did the whole good cop bad cop routine right there.

He is definately trying to create confusion with my trade in. But can you get a good deal on the car with a trade in?

If I add the trade in back to his price, he is trying to sell the the car above for 31,176 (almost $4000 over invoice).

I don't know who said this was a good deal, but it is not. I offered 30,500 ($3000 over invoice) and am starting to realize how it is all working here. If I hear from him today, I will go down there with my print out from carsdirect.com and see if they can match it.

One other thing...if they are trying to get $4000 over invoice, why aren't they jumping all over me to make the deal?

When I lowered the ball to $3000 over invoice, you would think I peed on someone's shoe and I haven't heard from them since?

I had a similar expreience at an Acura dealer. They wanted $2000 above invoice for a CL Type S with Navi. I laughed and walked out. The CL Type S invoices at 29,950 and I offered 28,500, the manager thought this was outrages (by the way the car had three major scratches and a rip in the driver seat, the manager offered to replace the trunk, hood, bumper, and seat from a car on the lot).

So again, what is a fair low price? I know fair is what am I willing to pay, but honestly these guys make you think you are buying a gold lined Maxima.

Is that 30,176 just the sticker price..and then you have to pay tax and dealer fees and all that other crap? IF so..that is wayyyyy....too much.

OK, were back to square one. I went buy and showed him that $30,351 was about $3000 over invoice and asking $14,000 for my truck will net him another $1000 which makes $4000 in profit.

He said, what do you want. I said "I am shopping for the lowest price". He said, find the lowest price and come back to me. So, now all I have to do is find a really good price. One dealership already went $500 lower. How do you work this deal?

I could care less if they give me $0 for the truck and $15000 to buy the Max, how do you work this deal...they don't even understand.

I told him I would not allow more than %3 profit and certainly not $4000.
