Failed emission test in Ohio..

Went to E-Check to get my emission check in order to renew my plate and I was almost 2x over the limit on Hydrocarbon(HC) and almost 50% over on Carbonmonoxide(CO). My readings were 144 for HC (limit in Ohio is 78) and 0.60 for CO (0.43 limit.)

Mods I have are for my 99SE 5sp are
-SC with 3.33" pulley
-Budget Y
-Carsound Cat
-Greddy Catback

I am going to replace my cat with the stock catalytic and see if that helps. Any suggestions? My plate expires end of this month

Oops!

I'd just change the cat as well. What about the RT cat?

I heard they may be changing E-check to every 6 years now.

Was teh car fully up to warm operating temp? I know when you swap out Y-pipes, they eliminate the 2 precats. As long as you drive around for 10 mins before inspection, you should be fine on that. Maybe your car is running rich??

How would I go about leaning out my car? Is there a way to do it without spending alot of money for say AFC unit?

My car was warmed up before it went for echeck. What a bum way to start a week...

SighMax...

Was the car in boost when they were getting these numbers or was it in Vacuum? There are things you could do with the FMU to lean it out alittle but that would be assuming that you were boosting.

Re: Curious

In Ohio, E-Check is done only in few selected counties and I happen to live in one. They test the car for few minutes at around 25MPH on a modified dyno machine. Since it's only at 25mph, I doubt it was on boost. Most likely in 2nd gear.

I would put my stock y pipe if I had it, but that's been gone for a long long time. The worst thing about it is that a mechanic has to check off all the work he has done on the back of my failed report and I have to have receipt for it all. They will issue me a waiver if I spend over $200 and reduce my deficiencies by 30%. I believe the spending cap is $300 and I have 2 years to correct it.

When is the 2002 5sp coming out?

By the way, what's the going rate for a cracked (repairable) Stillen front lip going for?

Re: Re: Curious

One of our local guys is having a similar problem with his 3rd gen he can't tell if its the Y(Custom Y) or Cat.. He didn't have the Stock nor RT cat though, but I think he just recently ordered it(RT).

I wonder is it the Y or Cat, in your case.. Stillen stated you don't need a Y with the SC maybe that's why???

You've got no choice, you need to find a stock Y-pipe. That's the problem.

Sighmax,

It just so happens that I have a stock Y after getting the Cattman. It is pretty rusty but looks to be in good shape with the exception of one end of the flex section where the braid is rusted out. I just passed E-check with flying colors back in August (or was it July?) and have boxed my stock Y for just such an occasion as yours. You can borrow it if you promise to take good care of it...

I am thinking though that your CAT may be a problem. In any case, with stock Y, stock CAT, my numbers were WAY below limits.

Let me know.

I live in Cincinnati and we have E-check here also. E-check exists in 14 counties in Ohio. I've hesitated getting the y-pipe because of the E-check even though new cars are exempt for their first two years.

Change your oil and add a bottle of isopropyl alcohol to the gas tank.
The y-pipe should only bring your emissions up slightly IF the car is warm.

I still think it's the Y-pipe. I'm not quite sure, but I think the FMU of the SC still causes the VQ to run slightly richer than stock at all rpms. If the car is running slightly richer, it will pollute more. His numbers appear to show a rich running car.

Failed in IL

I just failed my test yesterday too.

HC was 2X the limit at 1.15gpm (grams/mile). CO was ok.

All the fails were low speed approx 15mph and early in the test. Here in IL we've got a 4min dyno at various speeds up to 57mph.

Gonna get the 02 sensors checked (think they're all orig w 60K). Either it's that or the Cat didn't warm up enough (only 15min hard drive).

Running Cattman SS Y-pipe, RT Cat, Courtesy b-pipe, stock ECU, stock muffler

Re: Failed in IL

It's either the Y or Cat #:>( Our test are similar to yours.

Correction., I meant to say if the car is NOT warm. You are probably right Dave. He is most likely rich with the S/C. I don't believe it would be rich enough to cause him to fail though unless they did a smog check with the car cold. He could always try a hotter thermostat
just for the emissions test. I certainly would not run one all the time though as it could lead to detonation during boost.
