modding a 2002 max
modding a 2002 max
Ok my '96 auto is just a bit too slow for me even with the Y pipe and intake. Ideally, i'd like to get a 6 speed manual 2002, but I'm very used to having an automatic and while I think a stick would be fun, I'm just too lazy to think I'd want to have it as my daily driver. My question is: is the auto tranny for the 2002 the same as it was in previous years. What i'm getting at is will I be able to use Don's VB mod with my new max? What about a Y pipe and intake? if these three mods will work with the 2002 then i'd see no reason not to just get an '02 GXE.
2K2's Are Quick
i cant wait to go my new 2k2
got to get with a manny tranny though
drop a supercharger in it and it will all be good
my gousin got an impala ss 96
and he doin somethin with the engine using computer
he getting 124 hp out of it
damn wish i coulda done that with a max

Re: 2K2's Are Quick
parts from a '96 will not be interchangable with an '02. Parts from an '01 are probably going to be interchangable (not 100% sure).
By manual! Even for a daily driver.

Re: modding a 2002 max
I've driven a couple of 2k2 auto Max and they are quick for sure! If you put a Y-Pipe and oscai on the 2k2 auto it is going to be damn fast I would say as fast as a 2k1 5spd with y-pipe/intake. Can't wait to take out a 6spd though! I'm just imagining the highway power the 6spd would have with intake/y-pipe...
The only mods I know for sure will work on the 2k2 are the current springs for 2K-2k1 ie. h&r, eibachs etc. The clear side markers will fit as well. It looks like the fstb should fit (might be something in the way though) and I assume the RSB should as well. I think the main thing is finding out about the Y-pipe as to how restrictive the 2k2 one is and if the current cattman/stillen cali specs will fit?

Swap the 5 for a 6?
What do you gain on a 6speed over a 5? What does it change as far as where your RPMS are to speed? Are you going fater with a lower RPMs because of the extra gear? Think it would be possible to swap a 5speed in a 98 Max with a 6 from a 2002? Just curious what the difference it is and what t would change as far as performance.

As for fitting a 6spd in your max there are some issues like "do the bolts line up" and another problem is a 02 max no longer uses shift linkage to shift gears, it is now done electronicaly I believe.

For example when redlining a 95 5spd max in first gear it shifts into 2nd gear at about 4100 RPM's. Now a 2002 max will shift into 2nd at around 4400 RPM's that way your car stays closer to the peak power in the power band{when racing}.

The big "whoop" is the fact it is 255HP-246ft/lbs in a manual that doesn't lose as much power from the crank to the wheels as an auto.

They changed the ratios of 2-5 ever so slightly and slapped on a fuel economy gear. 2-5 are lower by like 3-5% and it has 6th gear. Big whoop.

Hmmmm I guess we all have to wait and see! I would say the 2K2 auto is just as fast as a 2K1 5spd stock for stock it would be close. I did notice the 2k2 does not shift at redline either I assume the 6spd will?

Are you positive that the 2k1 springs (H&R for examnple) will fit a 2002 Maxima?
I have read a couple of posts that the 4th gen. (97-99) springs fit a 2k1.
So, 4th gen springs will fit a 2002?
True? or False?

It most certainly is!!
I just got an 02 Max GLE and the thing flies.
Driving it back to back with an 01 Max 5 speed and the auto felt every bit as quick.
With a perfect launch the 01 Max 5 speed might jump out a bit on the 02 auto and not relinguish the lead, however, the key word there was "perfect." Not often, in stop light to stop light races or in even track settings, do people pull off "perfect" launches. Usually, their nerves and desire to win, often gets them spinning their wheels to much. With the auto, there are NO such launch problems and therefore, a 90-95% effort on the 01 Max 5 speed drivers part and that won't be enough, he'll lose to the 02 Max auto! There's also the perfect shift issue for the 5 speed driver as well. Miss a shift and you'll fall behind too!
One other note: What's the best times recorded for the 00-01 Max 5 speed in the 0-60 and 1/4 mile and 0-100?
I've seen Car and Driver get a time of 7.0 and 15.6@91 and 19.5 on a new, not broken in 00 Max SE 5 speed. And I think I've read a 0-60 of 6.7 somewhere else.
Well, Car and Driver recently tested an 02 Infiniti I35 and got it's 0-60 in 6.9, the 1/4 in 15.3 @ 92 and 0-100 in 18.2. This with an auto, a relatively new engine as well, and the Infiniti I35 is 100 pounds heavier than the Maxima.
Therefore, it's easily possible for a 02 Max with auto to pull off 0-60 times of 6.7-6.8 seconds and 1/4 mile times of 15.1 @ 93.
With those numbers, the two cars are neck and neck out of the hole and the 02 auto pulling a car length or so by the end of the 1/4. And that's with the manual driver executing a pretty much flawless run, much harder to do in a manual than with the punch and go, or brake torque punch and go auto.
Yeah, yeah the manual is more fun though, I know this, but the point here was the 02 Max with auto will run with, if not pull away from, an 01 Max manual on most occasions.

Max speed in each gear:
2001
38.52463302
68.40725376
99.49168197
132.655576
159.1866911
2002
40.56056118
65.785725
91.87316768
121.2203312
158.0809016
202.9959514
They moved 3 and 4, but they haven't really made the ratios any closer. 1, 2 and 5 are basically the same, so they only moved the place ment of 3 and 4 and added 6 after 5. That doesn't really constitute a "close-ratio" tranny. If 6th was the same as 5th in 01 (or any other year) and the rest of the gears were evenly placed in between then it would be a close ratio. That would give us something like this
38
60
85
111
137
159
