Little Argument about VW vs Max

I am on a 4x4 board because of my "other" hobby... and we got in a little discussion about someones next car. Being the brand **** that I am, I suggested an Altima or Maxima as a good alternative to the GTI VR6... all '02s of course. This is one of the responses I got, and I thought you all might get a kick out of it.

You guys throw 0-60 times around like that's all that matters. The VW might be a shade slower (from the factory, as if it can't be fixed ), but it has a certain character to it. All the Japanese cars seem so "cookie cutter" and boring to me. I don't care how fast a Maxima is, it's a boring looking 4 door sedan that is indistinguishable from 20 other Japanese sedans.... JMO, but C'mon, they all have that typical, non-offensive smooth 4 door look about them...
The joy of the power will fade, and all you're left with is a nerdy looking 4-door, that's comfortable, "peppy",and quiet (Thing's I'll worry about when I'm 65)...
On that note: If you catch your parents admiring your car and thinking about buying one too, you screwed up, Poindexter

This just oozes fun and excitement to me
He also posted a drab picture of a Max... and I replied with this...

Ummm... I will just start with the fast car and continue in that direction. Read all of my posts and you would know that I already commented on 0-60 times vs actually liking the car. In addition to 0-60 times, there are many other ways the Maxima outclasses the GTI.

You are comparing VWs to Maximas and talking about cookie cutters? Please. VW is king of the Cookie Cutters with the same boxy shape that they have always had and continued to try and make stick.

I like having room for my passengers… and I like having a sleeper. The joy of the power will fade?? Are you smoking crack? I have had my Max for three years and I still get compliments on it from all age groups. I could point you to a whole .org of people that would argue with you, but we are arguing aesthetics and that is just pointless.

You sound like the typical riced out Civic owner... I beat a Civic once because he egged me at a light... at the next light he yelled something about his Rims and that he would go home and get his other car. Run what you brung brother...

...and for your veiwing pleasure, I got what I think are a couple of better shots of the Max and Altima.
I posted a couple pictures that I thought were better...

(P.S. I am a long time lurker )

You are both right

Why? Because its a matter of opinion. Both have their definate attributes and drawbacks. Cookie cutter? -it applies to all cars in some aspect. Personally I prefer the reliable luxury sleeper which has just as much character, albiet austere, as the Germans. Different cars -different needs- different opinions.
That's what makes America great.

Compared to some, I agree... although I would replace the word boring with something else. More like calm, etc... but that is still arguing aesthetics.

The original post (which I know you did not see) said the guy was looking at a VW GTI VR6 or a Mustang. Neither of these cars strike me as lookers... I personally think the Mustang in some of its trim levels can be even more "boring" than the Max. VWs as I have stated have the crown for Boring and Cookie Cutter IMO.

Anyway, I figured he was interested in their performance value. So I offered alternatives, which he also asked for.

My problem with this particular reply, was that it reminded me so much of: "Oh yeah, well your ugly and your mother dresses you funny!"

Kind of funny how they compare a 2 Door GTI VR6 "Sport Hot Hatch" to a 4 door family car ie. Altima/Maxima. I think the Jetta would be a better comparison based on the fact is a 4 door or how about the Passat? The 2k2 Altima 5spd would destroy a GTI VR6 off the line, mid range and high end. Put some springs on the Altima and it would handle just as well. Not bad for a big four door family car eh?

yeah well if you put some springs on the GTi it'll handle better then the new altima with springs

Too bad the GTI is more expensive to begin with!

I drove a GTI VR6 for 3 years so trust me I know the car well.

The Altima has way more cabin space and lets not forget it is faster...let alone the 2K2 Max.

I drove a GTI VR6 for 3 years so trust me I know the car well. I now drive a Max now and would take a Max SE over a GTI VR6 without a doubt!

Maxima is not cookie cutter from the rear/rear 3/4. I guess I can see how he gets cookie cutter if you look at it from the side and front. But all car designers can do is have different shaped grilles and lights to distinguish from other cars because of aerodynamics/safety.

I think the Altima is a very good looking car, the Passat is too. Maxima isn't as nice, but it's not the Camry this guy seems to make it out to be...
