Running Without an Exhaust

Would it make a difference if I would run with or without a muffler? Has anyone tried to do this and if so, what were the results? So far, I know it sounds a little bit better than stock but thats it. Would taking off the muffler help or hurt on the 1/4 mile?

it would be very loud and possibly loose low end torque

I tried it already and it isn't that loud. It's only loud when idling. I didn't really feel a difference under hard acceleration but I wanted some numbers to prove the facts...

to people with an already loud exhaust system then its not going to get much worse... but for those who are stock it will be big... I have thought about this but I have a friend who tells me its bad because without the backpressure the headgasket can blow a lot easier (don't know if he is right, but not willing to risk it)

When I went to the track a couple of months ago, 2000MaxSE unbolted the exhaust directly behind the cat and his 1/4 time and mph remained the same. He made a couple of passes to support the fact that it did not make a difference.

When I took off my muffler, I noticed that I would get a stronger boost when downshifting and at the same time my wheels would churp, a bonus for me because at the time the only mod I had was a cone filter. About the noise, it wouldn't be too loud but you can hear you car from inside your home when you start the engine, other than that, the sound of a Maxima without a muffler isn't that great. Take one off a WRX, or a domestic car, and you'll know why I say that

FYI, your friend is totally full of it. Get him to explain exactly how low backpressure contributes to blown head gaskets...then report back here.

Where do people get the idea that backpressure in the exhaust system is so critical to proper engine operation, it isn't.

Loud

I drove with out mine. I felt no loss in power but a huge gain in noise at idle.

A friend of mine unbolted my muffler on Friday and I have had it off since then but decided to hook it back up this afternoon. Its definietly louder up to about 2500 then I dont hear it anymore. I guess thats because I am hearing my intake. I havn't been outside the car while it was unhooked so I dont know what it sounds like from out there.

Well, I ran open Y-pipe...and it was LOUD! My friend said he heard me literally a mile away when I was going to his house...yes, he could hear every gear I changed into for a mile on the way to his house...I know this because he basically told me how many times he heard me downshift between stop signs, and we went back and it was .9 miles on my trip odometer. Neways, about the track, I gained about 3 mph top end, and times were negligable. Lost lots of torque, but gained top end. Oh, the car loves to backfire running that setup too! Especially while warming up!

dump

If any of you want a much easier way to open/close your exhuast, just get a dump valve with a switch on your console. That way, regular exhuast when your out drivin, and open when your racing. They only cost about 65 bux, so it's a pretty good deal. It's also kinda nice to be able to pull up to a ricer, and momentarily pull the valve so he gets a little scared.

It you look under your car, you'll notice that the b-pipe is far from any metal objects and should not heat or burn any part of your car. You do hear a difference in sound, but don't think you'll sound like a Mustang GT just with the muffler taken off. If you want a louder sound, get a b-pipe without a resonator and take off you muffler, that should work.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I will just leave it on. If no real time difference takes place and there might be a chance for me to blow something, I don't think its worth it. I'll let you guys know what I run on Sunday. I might try to run once without the muffler just to see what happens...

Adam (aka My4dsc2000) ran at E-town earlier this year w/o an exhaust. Loud as hell, still put up his usual 13s. After his 1st run, they wouldn't let him back on the track b/c he didn't have an exhaust pipe. We were trying to make sense out of that. Plenty of Honduh's there were as loud, if not louder than Adam's car (especially those Domestics)

Adam went home pretty pi$sed.

Excuse me Officer: Could you please tell that kid to put the muffler back on his car? I cannot hear I single thing the band is playing!
