17X7 or 17X8 for a 4th gen

i'm in the market for rims. i did a search and I read that the 17X8 wheels will "stick out and give you that ugly look". I assume this means the tire will stick out beyond the wheel well. Is this true?? (my gut tells me it isn't).

Can anyone throw out pros/cons of the 17X7 vs 17X8 wheels-- e.g. the 17X7 wheels will be lighter than the 17X8s. how do 17X7 compare in performance, looks, to the 17X8?

go with 17x8 .... you will have more tire choices... as Hogan mentioned, offset determines how much the tires stick out....

You can have just as many tire choices with 17x7 and 17x8. Both will work fine on a gen 4. I can find 225/45/17 in at least 7 major tire brands for my 17x7s. I chose 17x7 because I didn't want to lose as much straight line performance and 17x8s would.

Doesn't 225/45/17 throw off the speedo more than 235/45/17? I thought the ideal tire size for 17x7 was 215/50/17 (which is hard to get tires for).

Compared to stock 215/55/16s, 225/45/17 is 1.3% smaller.

235/45/17 is 0.1% bigger than stock, so speedo error is better with 235s, but as long as the difference is less than 4%, its no biggie.
