Has anyone used a Toucan filter ->
The one that has a heat shield on it (it looks like a cone filter with a shiled on it http://toucanindustries.com/fulldesc...TOKEN=35701307)
Winter is approching and the CAI better go in the box, the hole be covered (rubber plug) and either the air box should go back on or a cone type filter be in place (the heat shield may also protect against splash in the engine).
Any insight?
The filter is marketed by R-Active and the local speed shop in Rochester NY is asking about $60 for it. Is there a place to get it cheaper?,
Please let me know,

I think you're better off going with a JWT or something. The heat shield will do little anyways. And I don't the the reactive filter is that big. The shielding is around the whole filter. Wouldn't make sense in our cars.

hmm
this whole arguement has been goin on in the Bimmer BBs for some time now...
the intake is a POS...
Foam sucks compared to Paper, think about it - foam breaks down, now where would it go..hmmm RIGHT INTO YOUR ENGINE !!!
my .56 and a half cents worth

gawd, I used one....IT SUCKS!!!! seriously...compared to the JWT unit that I have right now...! it is restrictive and stuff.
basically, the small inlet does not allow as much as to flow in as a JWT / Stillen unit. though I can't say that the "heat shield" does look cool. I have one which has a carbon fiber design "heat shield" on it. the filter gave me a "flat spot" when I gassed my car esp in low rpms.
what I mean is...imagine having to push the pedal "what feels like" half way down before the car reacts and gets moving...thats what I mean by flat spotting.
after almost 6 months of driving like that and having get beaten by cars that I know I can beat (Ford Probe GT, V6 mustang, V6 camaros...etc) I decided on spending some more $$ on a JWT unit (bought from courtesy nissan at $90 or so). felt an immediate diff....now a slight flex in the ankle on the throttle gives me instant reaction and the car moves...!
I don't know how a CAI equipped car feels like...but from what I've read...think that with this switch, you'd definitely feel a BIG diff.
if you still want it though, cos of Rochester's sheaty weather...(snow, slush...etc)..(was from there attending U of R before transferring to Purdue)..e-mail me...I'd sell you the unit I have...CHEAP! the filter was washed and oiled with the K&N recharger kit and is sitting in my storage...!

It's a pretty crappy filter. NOPI sells it for $30. You'd probably be better off just using the filter from your CAI without the lower pipe. That's the setup I'm running now and there's very little chance of any splash getting in there. Unless you drive in tremendously bad weather every day. And Stillnmax, it's not foam, it's gauze.
