Clutch/Tranny problems

A friend of mine has a 97SE with roughly 90K miles. Needless to say the clutch was on its way out, especially with all the city driving. So he went to a dealership to have it replaced. When he picked up the car the first thing he noticed is that the pedal went to the floor with little resistance. Over the next few days the resistance increased however he noticed some play in the clutch pedal. Also the engagement range for the clutch is very small, it grabs very quickly in the middle of the displacement. Is this normal for a new clutch? Also when the pedal is depressed slowly a squeak is heard at the linkage on the traqnsmission, it seems to start when the pedal is pressed half way down. Any thoughts on what is causing this noise? Lastly are there any general rules for breaking in a clutch. When he picked the car up no one told him anything. Any help is greatly apprecialted
