Except for last night when I had to get gas from the Rump Ranger. Bleh.

So Cal sucks as far as octane is concerned. Only 91 at the pump.

As for brands, I use Shell or Chevron. 91 octane of course.

Or if you hold 225 lbs. over your head, and I lift a flea 1 cm, I'm doing more work. I believe you totally misunderstand the notion of octane and predetonation. When you use super, your fuel will not detonate at the same compression. You can put super into a new 4 cyl. Accord, and you'll just be burning it out the tailpipe. It doesn't have a compression ratio that can benefit from super.

Can a Maxima benefit from super? Yes. Is it worth the money? To me? No. What is that money? It's $3.70 per tank, 18.5 gal times 20 cents per gallon. Will I get lower mpg? No, that's not what octane is all about. Will my knock sensor go bad? No, my car has been using regular for over 10 years, it doesn't need a new knock sensor. Would I have gotten more women over the years if I used super? Probably, but again, it's never been worth the extra $3.70 per tank, which, by the way was a lot when super was 1.29/gal., but not much now that super is around 3.89 (holy cow dropped below $4). Don't get me wrong, I do use super in my other car, as 89 is required and super is recommended. The fact that it's twin turbo, I do let the super argument slide with that car. But with a Maxima? I simply don't think it needs super.
Oh your right, I doesn't need it, but 'higher performance' for same volume of fuel used must equate to better milage. This engine is a tweener as far as octane requirement; you can run 87 but it 93 gets you more...

Been using 89 in the first full tank since I bought my 2001 GXE. No performance problems, no knocks, etc. Runs great. I'll switch to 91 when I next fill up and see if there's a difference. The manual (yes, I read the manual) says to use 91.

91 and whatever brand of fuel is convent. When money gets tight I do drop to 89 but I notice more pinging when I floor it.

The USSC (United Socialist Republik of California) does suck in the way of fuel since we have to use a mandatory 10% Ethanol blend and can only get 91 octane pump gas.

91 is about the tops around here but we are at about 4500 feet so it isn't as big of a deal. i think there is a small family owned station by my parents house that has 93 though

use regular most of the time, sometimes go premium once a month maybe.

i noticed several of u guys mentioning a noticable "ping" when u use the lower octane. never noticed that, but i do play my music loud almost all the time. is the pinging just audible, or do u guys feel an actual pinging vibration through the car/ pedals? just curious.

i used 87 octane for the first time before i got rid of the maxima just for the heck of it. mpg seems to be better by 1 or 2 mpg (i drive the same roads everyday) but you can definitely feel the acceleration lacking. there's also more noise coming from the engine even just driving around town. and on fwy you can hear the rattling or pinging more at like 2-2.5k rpm. hard to explain but the car just didn't run as smoothly as when using 91 octane.

Wow, you guys are burning some dirty **** over there.
I use BP Ultimate 98 Octane.
Its about $1.60AUD PerLitre at the moment, after that recent "price fall" (which seemed to jump straight back up to where it was).

Expensive but it gets me an extra 100-150 km per tank (opposed to 90 Octane), keeps my baby clean. Give the car the expensive s**t and it pays you back, easily.

Our standards here are Min. 90 Octane
Premium is usually 97-97
Some places offer 2 premiums (one about 95, the other about 98)

Havent tried any octane boosters yet....need to get around to that.

Windows down, radio off or turned down. From a roll stomp on the pedal and you will hear some clacking from the engine. It won't last more than a second but it will be there.

I have noticed the same thing when I tried that experiment with mine. Slightly better mileage but at WOT she just falls flat on her face. I rather take the mileage hit for the performance boost. Kind of a safe or sorry thing around here.

93 octane.

I used 87 the first tank of gas I put in the car when I bought it and the mileage was HORRIBLE, from then one it was Premium or nothing.

No way, no how. 93 octane does not get you better mileage. That would mean that everyone who uses super in Cali gets worse mileage than the rest of the country. Total misconception of what the octane rating represents. But our country was founded on this kind of stuff, the better off we are, the more we don't have to understand anything. Heck do you know there are people who will argue how leasing a car is better than buying, and actually try to use math to prove themselves? Of course the one assumption, and a major one, is that they never want to be seen in a car older than 36 mos.

Indeed ....................... its absolutely amazing to see people try to justify their beliefs.

Best I have seen till now must surely be:
Expensive but it gets me an extra 100-150 km per tank (opposed to 90 Octane), keeps my baby clean. Give the car the expensive s**t and it pays you back, easily.
.............for both ignorance and inability to calculate savings ........................ if you can repeatably demonstrate 20%+ fuel economy improvement (what is effectively being reported) this way then nobody should/will be driving on anything else - no?

agreed. Who/ what/ where is reporting anything close to 20% fuel economy increase??? that's ridiculous.

It's also probably the opinion that these ppl have been putting premium in their cars for years, and are HOPING that it's been worth it all along.

shell 93 octane v-power. even when i am so broke i am literally counting pennies. I just dont want to hear and feel my car complaining...(its very picky). plus it rewards me with great performance when i feed it the v-power.

For clarity,
100-150 MAXIMUM, with a reconditioned engine, tuned, and being driven nicely (ie, not thrashed), as opposed to 90 octane fuel.

Dont care about the engine conditions or whatever else you care to mention.

If you compare apples with apples on the same vehicle/motor, then all of your provisos are completely irrelevant.

20% saving on mpg easily offsets/justifies the more expensive gas by quite a margin if your theory is even close to plausible

................and wrt
100-150 MAXIMUM,
what exactly is your before and after mpg figures when practicing your "high octane fuel driving" saving? - I am simply basing my 20% estimation of your consumption savings above on my own current safe 600+km per tank with reserve light just on?
